AL West Rivals Struggling to Stay Above .500
The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angles battle on Monday as the fight for the AL West continues. Injuries in Spring Training neutered Houston’s offense, and the Astros are 3rd in the division. Meanwhile, the Angels are playing better than expected, trying desperately to convince Shohei Ohtani to stay in Anaheim.
The MLB lines list the Angels as +110 underdogs on the moneyline with a full game total of 9 runs.

Houston, You Have a Problem
Houston’s hitting has held it back all season, with Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve sitting out the entire year. Brantley is expected back this week. As a result, the Astros rank 15th in runs scored per game, 20th in batting average, and 27th in slugging. They also rank in the bottom 10 of strikeouts at the plate.
Monday’s starter Hunter Brown (3-1, 2.60), has been an unlikely hero thus far in 2023. He suffered his first loss of the year on Tuesday, but the Astros lineup didn’t do him any favors after getting shut out. His 1.18 WHIP over 34 ⅔ innings is phenomenal, and the Astros are 4-2 in games he starts.
The Angels only have four at-bats against Brown, with Jarred Kelenic recording the only hit.
Despite their poor overall record, the Astros are 10-5 against the run line on the road and remain one of the most profitable teams for MLB picks. With a return on investment (ROI) of 13.15%, MLB betting online in favor of the Astros is a tempting play when they are on the road.
Ohtani Heating Up
It’s no secret the Angels‘ success hinges on two players: Mike Trout and Ohtani. While Trout has enjoyed an excellent start to the year at the plate, Ohtani struggled to get going and saw his batting average dip to .253 at one point towards the end of March. But, the phenom put in some extra work during BP and got his average back above .300 at the start of April. He hasn’t hit a home run since last month but has six hits in his previous 20 at-bats.

Ohtani’s pitching is becoming an issue, but we can tackle that tomorrow.
Overall the offense for LA has been great, ranking eighth in runs per game and fifth in home runs.
The Halos rotation has also been solid, with Patrick Sandoval (3-1, 2.93) as one of its bright spots. The 26-year-old Southpaw is coming off his second consecutive win after holding the St.Louis Cardinals to one run in five innings on Tuesday. His K/BB rate of 4/3 wasn’t the best, but he navigated the baserunners and escaped with a win while lowering his ERA below 3.00.
However, things could get dicey for MLB bets on the Angels with Sandoval’s shaky stats against Houston. The current Astros lineup has a .333 batting average against him, with six home runs in 51 plate appearances.
Another thing to note is the Angels have one of the worst MLB betting records against the spread (ATS) in the league at 6-13.

Astros vs Angels Picks and Prediction
Sandoval struggled against the Astros lineup last season. But in 2023, Houston’s bats aren’t as scary, and two of their best hitters are injured. The odds for LA to win are too juicy to pass up, and I’m riding with the Halos to take Game 1.
The Houston Astros are listed at -120 in our Vegas MLB lines. If you wager $100 on the Astros, you can win $83. The Los Angeles Angels are +110, offering a chance to win $110 on a $100 wager.
