Houston Looks to Continue Hot Start

Quick Series Could Solidify Astros Hot Start

The Houston Astros are coming off a hot start, going 3-1 on Opening Weekend against the Los Angeles Angels. The opposite happened with the Arizona Diamondbacks as they dropped three of four to the San Diego Padres.

The seasoned Astros lineup could make quick and easy work of a young, inexperienced Diamondbacks team that seems to have strong, young talent, but hasn’t been able to put much together offensively.

Let’s dive into the series-opening MLB Picks, stats, stories and MLB Odds for the Astros vs Diamondbacks. We’ve plenty of MLB Predictions.

Astros Bats on Fire

The Houston Astros opened this season strong, putting up 20 runs in their first four games of the season. There doesn’t seem to be much that they can’t do. Alex Bregman is off to a red-hot start, hitting .429 and slugging two home runs to go along with his six RBIs. Yuli Gurriel will be back in the lineup Tuesday after taking a few days off for the birth of his child. That will add another weapon to an already dangerous lineup.

In the three wins on the young season, the Astros have covered the run line in all of them, and that was against a more potent offensive team. Don’t expect that to change against the young, inexperienced Diamondbacks. The Astros’ pitching staff also easily sits in the upper half of all the major pitching categories, so look for that to continue as well as the hot bats.

Diamondbacks Trying to Avoid Early Black Hole

Starting out the season against two heavy-hitting lineups was not the way the Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to open their season. They are looking to stay away from starting in a huge hole but couldn’t seem to get much going against the Padres in their opening series. They rank near the bottom of every major offensive category, and their bullpen hasn’t been able to hold together decent starts from their rotation.

With most sportsbooks picking the Diamondbacks to finish close to dead last in both the NL West and the MLB overall, this has not and will not be the start they were looking for in 2022. Outside of their lone win, the Diamondbacks failed to cover the run line in any of their three losses.

Starter Zac Gallen was scratched, and with a day off Monday, the Diamondbacks elected to start Madison Bumgarner on full rest. Bumgarner surrendered only one run in three innings of work in his first start. He did struggle with command, however, surrendering four walks.

Astros vs Diamondbacks Head-to-Head

The Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks only met in three games in 2021, with the Astros taking two of three. The Diamondbacks did manage to cover the run line in all three of those games, but with the way the Astros are swinging the bats right now, don’t expect that to happen this year.

Bumgarner has had fairly good success against a majority of the Astros lineup, but that was earlier in his career. He did, however, pitch wonderfully against them last year, giving up only two runs over seven innings of work only to get a no-decision, and the Astros won in 10 innings.

Astros vs Diamondbacks Prediction

With the scratch of Gallen as the Arizona Diamondbacks starter and Bumgarner replacing him, that makes things a little different. Bumgarner has had decent success with the Astros lineup, but he is not the same pitcher he was in a San Francisco Giants uniform. In his first start, he only allowed one run but surrendered four walks in just three innings of work due to pitch count regulation.

It’s doubtful that this changes very much with the MLB lines in this game. If Bumgarner can regain his command and go a little deeper in the game, the score should be a bit more competitive. But if the Astros lineup stays hot, the Diamondbacks don’t stand much of a chance.

When you bet online, take the moneyline win by the Astros at -157 on the road.

Pick: Houston Astros -157
