Athletics Try to Stay Above .500

The Oakland Athletics’ win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday snapped a two-game losing streak. It also put Oakland above. 500, a watermark it would like to stay at in the competitive AL West.

To do that, they’ll need a big game from right-hander Daulton Jefferies in Tuesday’s series opener. The 26-year-old is 1-2 with a 1.17 ERA this season, making three starts but having some hard luck.

Jefferies’ last outing saw him pitch six innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, however, he took the loss when his team failed to score and lost 1-0.

Oakland managed a total of three runs in the three-game series with the Rangers, with two coming in Sunday’s victory. Outfielder Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run homer on Sunday in just his second game back from the COVID-19 injured list. Piscotty is batting .286 with a double, a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored in seven games this season.

Giants Try to Keep Pace With NL West Leaders

The San Francisco Giants just completed a 12-game road trip that included stops in four cities, including a one-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. The game was a make-up date for a series canceled by the lockout, and the win over the Brewers gave San Francisco an 8-4 mark for the trip.

“It’s a group that really stayed together through a long, arduous, and challenging trip,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said after Monday’s win.

San Francisco is hoping to keep the momentum going in Tuesday’s contest, sending left-hander Carlos Rodon to the mound for the series opener. Rodon is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in three starts this season. He threw five shutout innings against the New York Mets in his last outing on Wednesday, allowing three hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Outfielder Joc Pederson is hitting the ball great for the Giants, tying for the MLB lead in home runs with six. He also has the fifth-highest batting average in baseball at .362 while driving in a team-high-tying 10 runs.

Shortstop Thairo Estrada also has 10 runs driven in while batting .258. He has three doubles, two home runs, and a team-best 13 runs scored.

Athletics vs Giants Head-to-Head

It has been a back-and-forth rivalry between these neighboring teams, with each team taking the season series twice in the last four seasons. The San Francisco Giants had the edge in 2021, winning four of the six games, including two of three at home.

The Oakland Athletics had the edge in 2020, taking five of six from their Bay Area rivals, including a 3-0 sweep in Oracle Park. The MLB lines are giving the host Giants the edge in the opener, something that will likely continue throughout the series.
