Athletics Offensive Woes Continue
The Oakland Athletics have been having trouble putting runs on the board this season, with Tuesday’s loss being the fourth straight game of two or fewer tallies for the club. Oakland is 14th in baseball in runs scored with 71 but ranks 28th in the majors in team batting average at .206.
Third baseman Sheldon Neuse has been the most consistent hitter for Oakland, coming into Wednesday with a .327 batting average. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the series opener, and he has a double, a home run, nine RBIs, and six runs scored this season.
Outfielder Seth Brown is batting just .196 this season, but he is tied for 11th in baseball with 13 RBIs. Brown was 1-for-1 with an RBI on Tuesday night, and now has four doubles, two home runs, and five runs scored.
Right-hander Paul Blackburn will take his turn on the mound in Wednesday’s series finale. He brings a 2-0 record and 1.80 ERA to his fourth start of the season. Blackburn picked up a win in his last outing, facing the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday and allowing one run on three hits in a five-inning stint.
Giants Dominating On The Mound
The San Francisco Giants have been getting some dominant pitching during their current five-game winning streak, and that continued on Tuesday night. Carlos Rodon had it going, striking out nine over six innings and allowing just one run to improve to 3-0 on the season. He has broken Tim Lincecum’s franchise record for most strikeouts through the first four starts with the club with 38.
“It’s only four games, there’s a lot more left,” Rodon said after Tuesday’s win. “There’s room to improve as far as secondary (pitches). Luckily we’ve been riding on that fastball and that fastball’s gotten me through these first four starts.”
Left-hander Sam Long will try to keep it going on Wednesday, making his third start and sixth appearance of the season. Long has yet to record a decision but also has yet to allow a run in 5⅔ innings of work. His last two outings were starts but they lasted two or fewer innings as the Giants have him in to begin a bullpen game.
Second baseman Wilmer Flores had a huge night at the plate in the series opener, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs. Flores is batting .283 this season with five doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs, and 10 runs scored.
Outfielder Joc Pederson is tied for second in the majors with six home runs. He’s batting .347 with two doubles, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
Athletics vs Giants Head-to-Head
The San Francisco Giants’ win in the opener of this series has them started towards a second straight season series win over the Oakland Athletics. San Francisco took four of six games from the Athletics in 2021.
The 2020 season was a different story, with Oakland winning five of the six matchups between the rivals. The MLB lines are giving the edge to the Giants on Wednesday as they look to sweep the series.
