Guardians Look to Keep Rolling Against Struggling A’s

Round Two for Oakland, Cleveland

Now, after Thursday’s 8-4 victory, the Cleveland Guardians have a chance to go two games over .500 for the first time since April 21. They will presumably face little competition from the Oakland Athletics, who are in the midst of a season-worst nine-game losing streak. Friday will mark the fifth time these teams have met in 2022.

Cleveland, down 4-2, scored the game’s final six runs, including a four-run bottom of the eighth to secure the Thursday win.

Athletics Unfit for Competition

The Oakland Athletics clean housed this offseason, trading several veteran stars and going into a full-scale rebuild for this season. It’s little surprise to see Oakland struggling to the tune of a 20-39 record, 17 games out of first place in the AL West. Even worse, the A’s have a dozen losses in their last 13 games.

Oakland is among the worst offenses, entering Friday third-to-last in runs (191) and dead-last in batting average (.210) and OPS (.598). Pitching hasn’t been very strong, either, ranking 25th in ERA (4.37) and 22nd in WHIP (1.32).

Paul Blackburn, the best pitcher on Oakland’s staff, tries stopping the skid Friday. Blackburn, a righty hurler, is 5-2 with a 2.62 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, but only 44 strikeouts in 58.1 innings.

Guardians Back Above Water

It wasn’t an easy start for the Cleveland Guardians, having lost 12 of their first 19 games this season. Now, Cleveland has become a favorite among MLB picks, winning four-of-five and moving to 27-26. That’s just three games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.

The Cleveland offense has been surprisingly solid in 2022. It still boasts a top-10 batting average (.248), ranks 17th in OPS (.702). However, their 45 homers are the fifth-fewest total. Cleveland’s 3.66 ERA ranks ninth while its 1.16 WHIP is sixth.

Triston McKenzie starts for the Guardians Friday night. The right-hander is 3-5 but has a 3.10 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Athletics vs Guardians Head-to-Head

Through the first four games between the teams, it’s been all Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland spanked the Oakland Athletics in sweeping a three-game NorCal series back in April before adding Thursday’s 8-4 win.

It’s a stark difference from past seasons, Oakland defeated Cleveland in the season series every year since 2017.

Athletics vs Guardians Prediction

The Cleveland Guardians are favorites, according to the latest MLB lines. Cleveland is -165 at home, while the Oakland Athletics are +145 underdogs.

With Blackburn and McKenzie on the mound, the sportsbook doesn’t anticipate many runs. While the Over/Under is set at 7½ the under is a slight favorite at -120.

Cleveland has owned this matchup all season, although its order hasn’t gone against Blackburn. However, the 28-year-old has just one quality start in his last four, so no guarantee he shuts down a suddenly hot Guardians team.

Oakland has scored more than two runs just twice over its nine-game skid. So, the smart money is on McKenzie doing his thing, just as he did in his May 1 start against the A’s throwing 6.1 shutout innings.

Based on recent scores and odds, take the Guardians to win this one on the moneyline.
