The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners are at the bottom of the American League West, starting their second series of the season against each other on Monday. This time around, the teams will play four games in Seattle. The Mariners swept three in Oakland on May 2-4.
It was expected that Oakland would be one of the worst teams in the league, with it headlining MLB news for possibly relocating. However, the Mariners had solid MLB playoff odds to start the season but have severely underwhelmed.
Athletics: Betting Positives
There has not been much to get excited about with the Oakland Athletics this season. The Athletics have scored the fourth-fewest runs and have the highest ERA in the league and the fewest wins. There are just not a lot of positives about this season.
However, from the MLB betting perspective, the Athletics have been a decent team to pick against. They tend to lose most of their games, making them a good moneyline bet to lose. Furthermore, they cover the spread 37.5% of the time, so playing the numbers against them is another solid bet.
Mariners Hoping to Get Spark
This season has not gone exactly how the Seattle Mariners had hoped after making the playoffs in 2022. They are 4-6 in the last 10 games, having lost the previous two series against good opponents, the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves.

Even though Seattle lost the rubber match with the Atlanta Braves, getting two runs off solo homers, it was at least a spark for the offense a little. MLB odds should be leaning back toward the Mariners at least a little with the next 10 games at home. They need a good homestand to spark their season.
Starting Pitching Matchup
Kyle Muller (1-3, 7.71 ERA) vs Luis Castillo (2-2, 3.31)
Oakland’s starting pitching has been the worst in the MLB, with a team ERA for the rotation at 7.26. Kyle Muller has been no exception with a 7.71 ERA through nine starts. Muller continued to struggle in his last outing, only making it through four innings and giving up five runs.
The Mariners will have the overall pitching advantage, leaning the MLB lines in their favor. To tip it more in Seattle’s favor, Luis Castillo will take the mound. He is one of the better pitchers in Seattle’s starting rotation. However, he is struggling in May, getting both of his losses with a 6.35 ERA in three starts.

The Mariners swept the first series against the Athletics, going 2-1 in covering the spread. The teams only hit the over once, mainly due to Oakland scoring a total of six runs.

Over/Under Pick
Given that both teams have struggled to put up runs, this could be a difficult bet. Even with Muller on the mound, giving the Seattle bats a solid chance of putting up runs, Oakland’s offense likely won’t be able to help. That would mean the Mariners’ lineup has to do the bulk of the work to cover the over/under spread.
