The Last Day of September
Baseball fans, we have almost made it to October. Friday is the last day of September and the playoffs are quickly approaching. There is a battle out West as the Oakland Athletics travel to T-Mobile Park to take on the Seattle Mariners to begin a three-game series. The Mariners are favored for those who bet on MLB.
The second-best team in the American League West is going up against the worst team in the division. In fact, the Athletics are 56-100, which is the worst record in the AL and the second worst in all of baseball. Their eyes are set on two things – spoiling the playoff chances of the Mariners and moving on to 2023.
Seattle has not clinched quite yet, but a lot would have to go wrong for the Mariners to miss the playoffs. Hopefully, you believe in miracles because the longest playoff drought in professional sports is likely going to end in the coming days.
The Mariners are 85-70 and hold a 5½-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the Wild Card. Seattle looks to not only clinch but take the five seed in the postseason as its magic number is one.
Playing Out String
After a rather disappointing 2022 season, the Oakland Athletics have not had a lot go their way. They would love nothing more than to challenge their divisional foes and win the opener of the three-game series on the road.
The A’s will call on Ken Waldichuk in the opener. If you have included Waldichuk in your MLB picks and parlays, you may not be happy, but hey, he’s a rookie.
The 24-year-old is 1-2 with a 7.15 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts through 22.2 innings. On the road, he has an 8.03 ERA, and opponents hit .348 against him at night.
With the worst batting average in MLB and 100 losses, the Athletics struggle on the Moneyline. Surprisingly, they are not horrible when it comes to covering the spread. Oakland is 74-81 against the spread and a very impressive 45-32 on the road.
Get Back on Track
No team wants to go into October cold. The Seattle Mariners were once one of the hottest teams in baseball, but have slowed down over the last month. If they want to be a threat in the postseason, they need to get back on track.
Seattle is known for their pitching, and Logan Gilbert is going to try to prove that on Friday. The 25-year-old is 13-6 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 170 strikeouts through 177.2 innings.
After pitching absolutely lights-out throughout September, allowing only two earned runs, he is coming off his worst start of the season. Gilbert allowed five earned runs against the Kansas City Royals in his last outing.
Seattle is good both on the Moneyline and covering the spread. The Mariners are 79-74 against the spread but only 33-39 at home. Seattle has struggled to produce runs but has a prime chance to do so against one of the worst rotations in baseball. The MLB lines will have the Mariners as favorites, but they need to get their offense hot again.
Athletics vs Mariners Head-to-Head
The season series between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners is a lot closer than you might think. Seattle holds a 9-7 advantage, but you expect more out of a team with nearly 30 more wins.
If you are betting online, you should note in their last series (just over a week ago), the Athletics won, holding the Mariners to one run in two of those wins.

Athletics vs Mariners Prediction
Even though the season series has been surprisingly close, our sportsbook has the Seattle Mariners as the clear favorites against the Oakland Athletics. Gilbert is one heck of a pitcher and had a nearly perfect month of September before his last start. Take Seattle -1½ over Oakland.
