Mariners Continue to Dominate A’s
The Seattle Mariners won for the 17th time in the last 19 games against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night, continuing their dominance of their division rival. Seattle won the last 12 meetings in 2021 before splitting a four-game series with the Athletics earlier this season.
“A good way to start the series,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said after Thursday’s win. “Need to keep it rolling. We’re not used to giving up six runs and winning.”
Rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez had a home run for the second straight game, scoring twice to add to his team-leading 43 runs scored. Rodriguez is batting .272 with 15 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs and 39 RBIs.
Third baseman Eugenio Suarez also has 13 home runs, with Suarez’s last dinger coming against the Athletics on June 21. Suarez is batting .234 with 16 doubles, a triple, 38 RBIs and 36 runs scored.
Seattle will have left-hander Marco Gonzales on the mound for Friday’s contest. Gonzales is 4-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 15 starts, striking out 47 and walking 31 in 81.2 innings. He took a tough loss in his last outing, going six innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four in a 2-1 setback.
Athletics vs Mariners Head-to-Head
Seattle took 15 of the 19 games between the two division rivals in 2021, including seven of 10 at home.
The Athletics have had some success playing in Seattle, winning two at T-Mobile Park already this season and earning at least three victories at the venue in each of the last 12 seasons. The MLB lines for Friday’s contest aren’t giving Oakland much chance.
