The Seattle Mariners try to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the Oakland Athletics for the first of a three-game series between American League West rivals on Monday night. Seattle was swept in a four-game weekend series by the host Boston Red Sox and is fourth in the AL West, two games behind the third-place Texas Rangers.
Oakland has dropped two in a row and is a half-game behind the Mariners in last place in the division standings. Both teams are desperate for a win, but before you make a bet online on the series opener, read our in-depth preview.
Athletics Feeling at Home on Road
The Oakland Athletics have been a better team away from home, going 11-12 as a visitor after winning one of three in their weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels. Oakland is just 6-14 at Oakland Coliseum, so it is hoping to make up some ground in the division race on the current road trip.
Left-hander Zach Logue will get the start in Monday’s contest. The 26-year-old rookie has three starts and four appearances, going 2-2 with a 2.04 ERA. Logue is coming off a loss to the Minnesota Twins on May 16 in which he went 4⅓ innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two.
Outfielder Seth Brown leads the Athletics with 21 RBIs, though he’s batting just .190. Brown has six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 12 runs scored.
Third baseman Sheldon Neuse has been a consistent threat at the plate, batting .261 to lead the club. Neuse is coming off an 0-for-4 day at the plate on Sunday, but he has three doubles, two triples, two home runs, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
Mariners Need to Turn Things Around
The Seattle Mariners have been in a bad slump over the last few weeks, dropping six of their last seven and 19 of their last 25 contests after an 11-6. The team is struggling in almost all areas in one way or another, though there is still optimism that it can be turned around.
“It’s continuing to focus on getting better, and we’ve had some adversity early in the season, more than we had really bargained for,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said after Sunday’s loss. “That’s just the way it goes. You’ve got to figure out a way to fight through it. ‘What can I do to help the team win today?’ We need everybody to chip in. It’s not just one guy.”
Infielder Eugenio Suarez had a home run in Sunday’s setback, his team-best eighth. Suarez is batting .225 with nine doubles, a triple, 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
Third baseman Ty France has been very good, batting .325 and leading the team with 28 RBIs. France enters Monday’s contest on a five-game hit streak and has eight doubles, six home runs and 17 runs scored.
The Mariners will turn to left-hander Marco Gonzales on the mound for Monday’s series opener. Gonzales is 2-4 with a 3.08 ERA in eight starts, having struck out 24 in 38 innings. He’s had a pair of solid outings in his last two starts, allowing just one earned run in each game. He picked up the win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, going six innings and allowing five hits while striking out two and walking three.
Athletics vs Mariners Head-to-Head
The Seattle Mariners dominated the season series between these division rivals in 2021, winning 15 of 19 matchups. The Oakland Athletics were just 3-7 when playing in Seattle last season.
Last season’s series win was the first for Seattle in three years. Oakland won six of 10 meetings in 2020 and 10 of 19 in 2019. The MLB lines favor the Mariners continuing their dominance from a season ago with a win in Monday’s series opener.
