Pittsburgh Getting Hot Once Again
This season started with the Pittsburgh Pirates surprising MLB lines by being one of the hottest teams in baseball. They did cool off a little but have won their last five games, starting a series with the Oakland Athletics on Monday.
MLB betting has been accurate about the Athletics, who have been the worst team in the league. After winning their second series of the season, they were just swept in the next.
Athletics Back to Losing
Oakland surprised MLB picks by winning a series against the Atlanta Braves, having lost 11 straight games before that. The Athletics played the Miami Marlins next and were swept, extending their losing streak to four games.
Beating the Braves does not seem to have changed the Athletics’ MLB odds too much, especially when a sweep follows that up. Oakland had a chance to avoid the sweep in the final game when facing the Marlins, putting up five runs in the third inning but losing 7-5.
Pirates Rolling
May was a tough month for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who went 8-18 after ending April with a 19-9 record. It was almost a complete flip. However, Pittsburgh seems to be reverting to its play from April, headlining MLB news with the longest winning streak, five.

The streak began on May 30 and has continued into June. Maybe the changing of the month is bringing some better luck. It has undoubtedly helped spark Ke’Bryan Hayes’s bat. He has a batting average of .450, hitting two homers and adding seven RBIs over the last seven days.
Starting Pitchers
JP Sears (0-3, 4.37 ERA) vs Johan Oviedo (3-4, 4.50)
JP Sears is coming off a really good month of May for the Athletics. He had a 2.94 ERA through six starts, striking out 27 through 33.2 innings. Sears only had one bad outing, allowing more than two runs once. However, Oakland has only won one of his six starts, which he would not be credited with.
Inconsistent Johan Oviedo will be taking the mound for the Pirates. In his last start, Oviedo would only make it through 4.1 innings before being pulled, only giving up one run but walking five batters. He struggled with location throughout May, walking 18 through five starts.
