2 Best MLB Player Props 9/9

1. Royals SP Brady Singer Over 2½ Earned Runs

The Yankees took two of three at Wrigley Field over the weekend, and the Bronx Bombers return home and will host the Royals. New York holds a half-game lead in the AL East over the Orioles entering Monday. New York has the best record in the AL (82-61). The Yankees have a +122 run differential, the second-best mark in the bigs (Brewers, +134). The Royals have won four straight and are coming into the series off a massive sweep of the Twins.

The Kansas City Royals have been terrific in 2024, but the back end of their rotation is due for regression. They have an excellent young core led by Bobby Witt Jr., who has exploded onto the scene in 2024. New York will face veteran righty Brady Singer in the series opener. The Yanks own the fourth-highest batting average in the league (.257) and are first in wRC+ against right-handers. The 28-year-old righty has posted strong numbers in 2024, but his advanced metrics suggest he has been shaky.

Singer is in the 33rd percentile in xERA and 21st in xBA. He has allowed 3 earned runs or more in four of his last seven starts overall and four of his last five on the road. Singer has an OBA of .231 at home compared to .279 on the road. The split that jumps out the most has been his struggles against lefties. He has allowed a .299 batting average to left-handed hitters compared to .195 to righties. This is key because Aaron Boone can load the lineup with lefty bats.

Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Austin Wells, and Anthony Rizzo can all be in tonight’s lineup. When Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are your big righty bats, anything can happen. The Yankees have the highest OPS in the league against right-handed pitchers (.789). Fire up the Yankees ahead of this exciting series.

For my first c, I’m trusting New York to stay hot.

Bet on Brady Singer Over 2½ Earned Runs (-130)

2. Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks Over 2½ Earned Runs

I’m going to keep things dry here to begin the week. We’re going to back the Yankees and the Dodgers. LA will host the Cubs in the series opener of a three-game set. The Cubbies will have veteran 34-year-old right-hander Kyle Hendricks on the mound.

I’ve recently highlighted the Dodgers struggles when Mookie Betts was out of the lineup; however, they have quietly been on fire since Betts returned. MLB news outlets and pundits have shown belief that the Diamondbacks and Padres can push the Dodgers for the NL West title, but I disagree. The Dodgers’ lead in the NL West is now up to 6 games on San Diego and Arizona. They are starting to get healthy at the right time.

Since Betts returned from the IL, the Dodgers are 17-8. Hendricks has been smacked around this season. The Professor is in the 3rd percentile in xBA and 8th in xERA! He is still managing to get soft contact, but this Dodgers lineup has terrific numbers against him: Betts (3 for 9), Freddie Freeman (5 for 14, 1 HR), Teoscar Hernandez (2 for 2), Max Muncy (3 for 10, 1 HR), Shohei Ohtani (2 for 3, 1 HR).

The lineup is a different beast with Betts back at the top of the order. Before Betts’ injury, the Dodgers were in the top three in wRC+, batting average, and runs scored. In the two months without Betts, they dropped to 9th in wRC+, 17th in batting average, and 11th in runs! Since he returned on August 12, they are fourth in wRC+ and third in batting average.

Shohei Ohtani is on a torrid pace to reach 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. Max Muncy has also boosted the Dodgers offense since he returned on August 19. Muncy has struggled against lefties, so we can’t count on him, but he provides pop to the order.

Hendricks has allowed at least 3 earned in five of his last eight outings. In 2018 and 2019, he was smacked around at Dodgers Stadium, allowing 5 and 6 earned runs the last two times he pitched there. Trusting the Yankees and Dodgers aren’t the sexy MLB picks you might be looking for, but both powerhouses are in great spots this evening.

Bet on Kyle Hendricks Over 2½ Earned Runs (-159)
