Blue Jays’ Lineup Hopes To Deliver Timely Hits
The St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays opened the season with a contest that caught the eyes of many making MLB picks.
The Blue Jays and Cardinals combined for 19 runs, with Toronto scoring a one-run victory. With both teams having postseason aspirations, this is a good measuring stick to open the season.
Neither team winning this series will necessarily mean success come August or September, but this is a nice test out of the gate. Both teams have the opportunity to test themselves against a quality opponent.
Blue Jays’ Offense Picks Up Where They Left Off Last Season
Toronto was one of the top power-hitting teams in MLB last season. The Blue Jays are a team that people looking at MLB lines will be able to count on pushing the number over the total. In the season-opener, Toronto did so in an unorthodox fashion for them. By plating ten runs for the Blue Jays, Toronto relied on five hits from George Springer and four from Bo Bichette.
The Blue Jays didn’t have any home runs but did come up with 19 hits, including three extra-base hits. When it comes to scores and odds, Toronto will have one of its more reliable pitchers from last season, Kevin Gausman, on the hill. Gausman was 12-10 last season with a 3.35 ERA and finished ninth in the league with 205 strikeouts.
Cardinals Not Sure What To Think About Pitching
People in St. Louis have been doing some major hand-wringing over how starting pitcher Jack Flaherty looked in spring training. The Cardinals’ right-handed pitcher hasn’t made more than 17 starts in a season since 2019. While his opportunities in 2020 were limited by the pandemic, MLB news shows Flaherty has been limited by injury issues over the past two seasons.
Flaherty made nine appearances for the Cardinals last season, compiling a 2-1 record with a 4.25 ERA and finished with a -.1 WAR. St. Louis opened the season with a strong start on offense. The Cardinals pounded out 15 hits and scored nine runs. Brendan Donovan and Tyler O’Neill both hit home runs for St. Louis in the season opener.
