Blue Jays Fail to Get Clutch Hits in Loss

The Toronto Blue Jays outhit the Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Tuesday night, but they managed just a single run on a solo home run from catcher Zack Collins. Three players had multiple hits, but none could push a teammate across the plate.

First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday. Guerrero is batting .317 this season with a double, five home runs, 10 RBIs, and seven runs scored.

Third baseman Matt Chapman is batting just .229 but has a double, two home runs, seven RBIs, and two runs scored. Outfielder George Springer is hitting .267 with four doubles, two home runs, five RBIs, and seven runs scored.

Toronto will turn to right-hander Jose Berrios for the start in Wednesday’s contest. Berrios has yet to record a decision this season, recording an 11.81 ERA in his two starts. Berrios has allowed at least three runs in each of these two appearances, including lasting just ⅓ of an inning in his season debut against the Texas Rangers on April 8.

Red Sox Eke Out Win in ‘Playoff Game’

The intensity of the series opener was evident, with both teams fighting for the early upper hand in the division race. The Boston Red Sox were able to cash in on only three hits, and manager Alex Cora said he felt like it was a bigger win than a typical regular-season game.

“It seemed like a playoff game, right? And I managed it like a playoff game,” Cora said after Tuesday’s win. “I went for the win. We will be better. We want more than two runs, obviously, but today, it was enough to win the game.”

Second baseman Trevor Story had an RBI double in the win, extending his hitting streak to six games. Story is batting .259 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run scored in his first season with the Red Sox.

Outfielder Alex Verdugo has been the biggest bat for Boston this season, batting .333 with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs, and four runs scored. Third baseman Rafael Devers has also been solid this season, batting .319 with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, and eight runs scored.

Right-hander Nick Pivetta will get the ball for the start in Wednesday’s game for Boston. Pivetta is 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA this season, giving up four runs in each of his first two starts. Pivetta is coming off a two-inning start against the Minnesota Twins on Friday in which he allowed four runs on five hits, including a home run, while striking out two and walking two.

Blue Jays vs Red Sox Head-to-Head

The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox have played tight season series for the past few seasons, with last year’s being a 10-9 advantage for Boston. Toronto was 5-5 at Fenway Park in 2021 after winning four of the seven matchups at that park in 2020.

The Blue Jays haven’t won the season series from their division rivals since the 2016 season, but the matchup over the last three seasons has been 26-22 in favor of the Red Sox. The Blue Jays are getting the edge on the MLB lines for Wednesday’s contest despite playing on the road.

Blue Jays vs Red Sox Prediction

The Toronto Blue Jays have too many weapons in their lineup to be held to just one run again, especially with a struggling pitcher like Pivetta on the mound. The Boston Red Sox will get their share of hits as well, but it won’t be enough from keeping the Blue Jays from evening the series.

When doing your MLB betting, take Toronto to pick up the win on the road.

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -125
