Red Sox Look to Salvage Split

AL East-Leading Rays Seek to Bounce Back After First Loss in 10 Games

The Boston Red Sox appeared dead in the water heading into game three of four from Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, the team stepped up in a big way and prevailed  3-2 on Wednesday night to snap Tampa Bay’s nine-game winning streak.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. ET. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch for Boston against Shane McClanahan of the Rays.

MLB odds have the American League East-leading Rays as sportsbook favorites with moneyline odds of -155. Boston is +140 to win, and the over/under has been set at 7½ runs.

Sale Prevails for Boston

The Red Sox have been struggling because of a COVID-19 breakout among the team. Yet, the Red Sox stopped a three-game slide with Wednesday’s victory to maintain their hold on the second Wild Card in the American League. The team is still struggling with the virus as eight players, and two coaches have tested positive or are considered close contact individuals.

This did not stop the Red Sox from winning a necessary game on Wednesday evening. Chris Sale went six innings and gave up two runs, putting his team in a position to win. Jarren Duran had a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning to edge the red-hot Rays.

After the game, Sale spoke about his team’s fight throughout the contest. “There’s no doubt we’ve had some gut-punches over the last week, week and a half. We’ve still got some fight left in us, we’ve got some kick. No one in here has given up.”

If the Red Sox can repeat their game three magic, they will leave Tampa Bay with a series split against the best team in the American League. This should help their confidence in the final month of the season. Nevertheless, this will not be an easy task because of all the COVID-19 issues.

Red Sox Fighting for Wild Card

The Tampa Bay Rays have not clinched a playoff spot, but their odds to play meaningful baseball in October are very high with a seven-game lead atop the AL East. On the other hand, the Red Sox are fighting to stay alive in the second Wild Card position.

The Red Sox should be included in your MLB picks to make the playoffs, but it’s going to be a difficult final month of the season.

Boston will get a slight reprieve against the Cleveland Indians for three games this weekend at home. They must play the Rays, Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners for a combined nine games before another easy stretch against the Orioles and Mets.

They finish the season against the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals. They are going to have to win a lot of these games because Oakland is two games back and Seattle is 3.5 from overtaking them in the Wild Card race.

Who Wins?

The Red Sox prevailed on Wednesday night because they were able to limit Tampa Bay’s offense. This is the formula for Boston to win without some of their stars like Kike Hernandez and Xander Bogaerts.

MLB lines give the Red Sox a lot of value in this game if you are willing to take a risk. If you want to bet online, I would take the Red Sox on the money line on BETUS Sportsbook. The Red Sox carry momentum well so it would not be surprising to see them play well in the series finale.

Pick: Boston Red Sox +140
