Arizona Skidding into Series Against Visiting Atlanta

Braves Begin Road Trip

The Arizona Diamondbacks look to avoid a fifth straight loss when they host the Atlanta Braves for the opener of a three-game series on Monday night. Arizona was swept at home by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend and sits in fourth place in the National League West, one game ahead of the last-place Colorado Rockies.

Atlanta is coming off a win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday and is in second place in the NL East, 8½ games behind the first-place New York Mets. Both teams could use some wins, so read our in-depth preview of this contest to help you decide how you want to make your bet online.

Let’s check the MLB lines, stats, injury reports and MLB odds for Braves vs Diamondbacks. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Braves Heating Up at Plate

The defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves have been fairly inconsistent, as shown by their sub-.500 record, and they enter Monday having alternated wins and losses over their last five games. But, the team feels like it’s starting to hit its stride, especially after hitting a season-high nine extra-base hits in Sunday’s win over the Miami Marlins.

“Everything is pulling together,” Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna said after Sunday’s win. “I think we have a good group and we are champions.”

Ozuna had a big day on Sunday, hitting a pair of solo home runs. He’s batting .228 with five doubles, 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Third baseman Austin Riley also had a pair of RBIs in the victory, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Riley is batting .250 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Atlanta will have right-hander Spencer Strider on the mound for his first MLB start in the series opener. The 23-year-old is 1-1 with a 2.22 ERA in 11 appearances after making two relief appearances a year ago. Strider earned a win in his last outing, throwing 2.2 shutout innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, allowing no hits while striking out five and walking two.

Diamondbacks on Four-Game Slide

The Arizona Diamondbacks ran into a buzzsaw in the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, as they were swept in a four-game set by a cumulative score of 26-8. The Diamondbacks could not get much going offensively, so even in games in which they held the potent Dodgers to just three runs (Saturday and Sunday), they came up short.

Right-hander Zac Gallen hopes to get some better offensive support when he makes his ninth start on Monday. Gallen is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA, striking out 43 and walking 10 over 44.2 innings. He is coming off an ugly outing against the Kansas City Royals in his last start, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits, including a home run, while striking out four and walking two.

First baseman Christian Walker was 1-for-3 with a walk in Sunday’s loss, giving him just three hits in the four-game series with the Dodgers. Walker leads Arizona with 12 home runs and 22 RBIs, but he’s batting just .195 and has struck out 38 times. The Diamondbacks have six players with 35 or more strikeouts, and they rank behind only the Atlanta Braves with 455 strikeouts as a team.

Outfielder Pavin Smith has the most on the Diamondbacks with 49, but he also has a team-best .264 batting average. Smith has five doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Braves at Diamondbacks Head-to-Head

The Atlanta Braves took the season series from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021 thanks in part to a 3-1 record at Chase Field. Atlanta has gone 9-3 in its last three trips to Arizona (the two teams didn’t play in 2020).

The season series between these two clubs has been close in each of the last three seasons, with the series being 4-3 each time. The MLB lines for Monday are giving the visiting Braves the edge in the series opener.
