San Francisco Awaits Defending Champions

Braves Still Chasing Division Title

A year ago, a mid-September matchup between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants would have been a showdown between teams fighting for playoff positioning. Atlanta, the defending World Series champion, has done its part as the Braves have the best record among the non-division leaders and are only 1½ games behind the New York Mets in the National League East. The Giants went from having the best record in baseball in 2021 to limping along six games under .500.

Atlanta is one of three National League teams with at least 40 road wins. The 105 home runs hit by the Braves away from home are the most in the majors. Atlanta is 31-15 since the MLB All-Star Game while San Francisco is just 19-30.

According to the MLB playoff odds, The Braves (+750) trail only the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets among National League teams in the odds to win the World Series.

Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports and MLB odds for the Braves vs Giants. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Rookies Coming Through for Braves

The feeling was that sooner or later, Michael Harris and Vaughn Grissom would make an impact for the Atlanta Braves. It turned out that it has been sooner.

Harris made his major league debut on May 28 while Grissom debuted on Aug. 10. Now they are two of the most productive players for an Atlanta team that is coming off a World Series title.

Harris leads the Braves with 33 runs and 53 runs and is tied for second with eight home runs since the MLB All-Star Game. Not counting catcher Chadwick Tromp, who has played in one game, Harris and Grissom are first and second on the team in on-base and slugging percentage as the two 21-year-olds have helped the Braves put the pressure on the New York Mets in the National League East Division race. Grissom is batting .393 and Harris is batting .419 in the month of September.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in seven of Atlanta’s last 10 games in San Francisco.

Giants Eye Third Win in Row

It would take quite the surge for the San Francisco Giants to return to the postseason. However, there are some positive signs for the team heading into the series with the defending World Series champions.

San Francisco won the final two of a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores homered as the Giants won the series finale 4-2 on Sunday night.

The hope is that veteran Alex Cobb can keep the Giants headed in the right direction. It is hard to know what to expect from Cobb. In his last 10 starts, he has allowed one run or less five times with a 2-1 record and an ERA of 0.57 in those games. In the other five, he is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA.

He lasted just 4⅓ innings in his last start and gave up seven hits to go with three runs. Cobb has shown the ability to bounce back after a subpar outing over the last month and a half.

The MLB betting lines total has gone over in five of San Francisco’s last six home games.

Braves vs Giants Head-to-Head

The Atlanta Braves have won four of the last five games against the Giants. Each of the last seven games in the series has been decided by three runs or less.

The Giants took two of three games the last time the Braves came to town.

Dansby Swanson leads Atlanta with a .412 batting average and three home runs against the Giants. Michael Harris is batting .385 and Travis d’Arnaud .357 while Matt Olson has a team-high six RBIs in the four games against the Giants.

The Giants have a .296 team batting average with four doubles and six home runs against the Braves in 2022. Joc Pederson is hitting .333 with two home runs. Two of the other top hitters against the Braves are Darin Ruf (now with the New York Mets) and Austin Slater, who is on the injured list.

Braves vs Giants Prediction

This is a tough test for the host Giants in the opener of the three-game series, facing red-hot Atlanta pitcher Spencer Strider. Strider has allowed two runs or less in seven of his last eight starts. He is 6-1 with an ERA of 2.14 during that stretch. Strider (-200) is ahead of his teammate Harris in the National League Rookie of the Year odds.

San Francisco could be without catcher Austin Wynn, who has missed the last two games as a result of a concussion.

Something to consider for those who bet online: The total has gone over in five of Atlanta’s last six games as well as in eight of the last nine road contests. On the other side, each of San Francisco’s last five games finished under the total.

It is hard to pick against an Atlanta team that is 7-2 in September and has Strider get to get the ball on Monday night.
