The Atlanta Braves look to clinch the NL East title when they take on the host Miami Marlins in the second of a three-game series Tuesday night. Atlanta fell, 4-0 in Monday night’s series opener as Miami’s Jesus Luzardo (12 strikeouts over six innings) and three relievers combined on a four-hitter. Miami’s now-three-game win streak ended Atlanta’s own three-game run. Atlanta’s Just One More
The Atlanta Braves need just one victory in their series against the Miami Marlins to clinch their fifth straight NL East title, They didn’t get it Monday night, blanked, 4-0. Atlanta is fully aware the Marlins aren’t going to make things easy in this season-ending series.
“You just can’t go out and win a baseball game. There are a lot of moving parts in it,” manager Brian Snitker said after Monday’s loss. “These are dangerous teams, guys out there with talent. It’s hard to win a game. We’ll go get a good night’s sleep, come back and do it again.”
Atlanta managed just four hits in the loss Monday, including two by shortstop Dansby Swanson. Swanson is batting .279, with 32 doubles, a triple, 25 homers, 96 RBIs and 99 runs scored.
Righthander Jake Odorizzi gets the start in the second game of the series. Odorizzi is 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 21 starts, 79 strikeouts in 101⅓ innings. He lasted just 3⅔ innings against the Washington Nationals Wednesday in his last start (two runs [one earned], four hits, no strikeouts, three walks).
Marlins Party-Poopers Monday
The Miami Marlins haven’t been pushovers in the season’s final days, that after winning three-of-four against the imploding Milwaukee Brewers, then stymying the Braves with an aforementioned 4-0 win Monday night. They have played hard in the final games of Don Martingly’s tenure as manager.
Lefty Braxton Garrett tries to keep Miami’s run going Tuesday night, making a 17th start of the season. Garrett is 3-6 with a 3.56 ERA, 83 strikeouts in 83⅓ innings. His last appearance against the Brewers this past Thursday wasn’t great (four innings, two runs, seven hits, while two strikeouts, no walks).
Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz had a two-run home run Monday night. He finished 3-of-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. De La Cruz is batting .249 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs, 43 RBIs and 37 runs scored
Designated hitter Jesus Sanchez was also 3-of-4 in the win, hitting two doubles and driving in a run. Sanchez is hitting .212 with 14 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and 36 runs scored in 96 games in 2022.
