Braves Still Trying to Get to Form

Padres Out to Repeat Dominant Showing

Manny Machado shined in the San Diego Padres home opener, becoming the second batter to turn in a five-hit game in the young campaign. It was the first such effort for the club since 2018.

In all, the offense banged out 16 hits, an impressive act for a lineup that has been on top of things out of the gate. First baseman Eric Hosmer, in specific, has been on a tear. In 26 at-bats, he’s racked up a dozen hits, five of which have been for extra bases. Outfielder Jurickson Profar sports an average north of .300 and leads San Diego with eight runs driven in.

Lefthander MacKenzie Gore, the third overall choice in the 2017 draft, is a gifted hurling prospect. He should be comfortable in his major league introduction. He punched out 16 challengers in 12 innings in Spring Training and recorded five scoreless frames in a Triple-A outing last week.
