Doubleheader Kicks Off Series Between NL Central Foes

Rough Road for Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are coming off a split in the Crosstown Classic against the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, earning a two-game split of their weekend series.

Chicago returns to Wrigley Field to open a rugged nine-game homestand against the top two teams in the National League Central. The Cubs play four against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers, starting with a doubleheader on Monday, before a five-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Milwaukee salvaged a split of a four-game series with St. Louis over the weekend to maintain a 3½-game lead in the NL Central.

Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports and MLB odds for Brewers vs Cubs. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions.

Brewers Look to Keep Offense Humming

The Milwaukee Brewers enter the contest at 30-18, 10 games up on the Cubs in the NL Central. They ended a two-game slide with an 8-0 win in Sunday’s series finale in St. Louis.

It was a nice sight for the Brewers to see the offense humming again. While they’re atop the NL Central, it’s been their pitching that’s got them this far. None of their starters are hitting .300.

The bottom part of the order came through on Sunday. Lorenzo Cain got his first home run as part of a 3-for-4 day and drove in three runs. Jace Peterson got in on the action with a home run. Up there with the best names in all of sports, Rowdy Tellez went 2-for-4 and hit his 10th home run.

While the Brewers have been solid on the road, going 16-12 away from American Family Field, they’re a dominant 14-6 at home.

Unfriendly Confines

There’s a lot of cliche sayings about your home and that’s where you hang your hat, etc. But none of those friendly sayings have been kind to the Chicago Cubs this season. They’re a National League-worst 7-15 at home, behind only the Oakland Athletics (7-17) for the worst home record in baseball.

Meanwhile, the Brewers are a respectable 16-12 away from American Family Field, part of the reason they’re favorites in the nightcap of Monday’s doubleheader.

The Brewers send Aaron Ashby to the hill on Monday night. He’s 0-3 and has seen time as both a reliever and starter. He has four starts to his name with a 2.91 ERA and 39 strikeouts.

The Cubs counter with Drew Smyly who enters with a 2-5 mark and a 4.08 ERA. After winning his first start, Smyly lost five of his next six with a no-decision. However, it’s tough to say it’s all Smyly’s fault as he hasn’t had an ugly game. He hasn’t given up more than four runs in an outing and has allowed three or less in all but two, so some of it is due to Chicago’s lack of offense.

Brewers vs Cubs Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting on the season between the two NL Central clubs.

The Brew Crew dominated the Cubs last season, going 15-4. In fact, the last time the Brewers were at Wrigley Field, it produced quite favorable results. They walked out of Wrigley with a four-game sweep and amassed 37 runs in the four-game series, 27 coming in the final two.

Brewers vs Cubs Prediction

The Brewers dominated the Cubs last season Monday should not be any different. While it would be way more ideal if Milwaukee was sending one of its aces to the mound instead of a reliever-starter mix, the -133 line for the Brewers is still too low.

Wrigley Field might as well have belonged to the Milwaukee Brewers last year, and the Cubs haven’t done well at home this season either. Take Milwaukee on the moneyline.

Pick: Milwaukee Brewers (-133)
