If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to continue to be a threat in the National League, they are going to have to get better starting pitching. St. Louis has a team ERA of 3.81, but the starting staff hasn’t always lived up to the hype.
Dakota Hudson will be starting on Monday night, and he has gotten mixed results. Hudson is 6-4 with a 3.83 ERA, but he will have his hands full in this matchup against the Braves.
Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado have both had monster seasons for the Cardinals. Goldschmidt leads the team with 19 home runs, and 65 RBIs, and Arenado recently had a cycle and a two-homer game.
Braves’ Bats Have Some Thunder
After the Atlanta Braves beat the Reds over the weekend, Cincinnati manager David Bell said, “Their lineup took over the game.” That has been a common theme for Atlanta over the last month as the Braves have belted 122 home runs this season.
Austin Riley is having a career season as he leads the team with 20 home runs and 48 RBIs. Dansby Swanson has a team-high batting average of .301 in a lineup that has plenty of talent.
Kyle Wright will be starting for the Braves, and he is 9-4 with a 3.03 ERA. Wright has the ability to take over the game completely, but he doesn’t have to be dominant with this offense.
Cardinals vs Braves Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting of the season between the Cardinals and Braves, but scores and odds from a season ago could provide some helpful information.
Making MLB picks is never easy when there are a pair of playoff contenders squaring off, but it’s important to look at the starting pitching matchup. That is where you are going to see a pretty big edge for the Braves. Also, the Cardinals’ offense has been scuffling a bit.
It’s just hard to picture the Cardinals doing much scoring off Wright and that will give Atlanta’s offense a chance to take control. This game will be close for a while, but the Brave will eventually break it wide open at home.
Head to BetUS Sportsbook and take the Atlanta Brave -1½ over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.
