Cardinals Falling Behind in NL Central

Los Angeles needs more consistency from its batters. First baseman Freddie Freeman (.302) and catcher Will Smith (.318) are the only players with a batting average in the .300s. It has been a disappointing start for several players, mainly outfielder Mookie Betts. He is hitting only .232, which would be a career low. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez (.250) was also placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back tightness ahead of Friday’s game.
Despite hitting concerns, the Cardinals are a good matchup for the Dodgers. We saw that on Friday, as Los Angeles scored five runs on extra-base hits, including two home runs. Slugging has saved the Dodgers this season. Los Angeles ranks fourth in slugging percentage and second in home runs per game. Meanwhile, St. Louis is 24th in opponent slugging percentage.
