San Diego Looks to Bolster Wild Card Hopes

Padres Riding Four-Game Winning Streak

The San Diego Padres look for a fifth straight win when they host the St. Louis Cardinals for the second of a three-game series on Wednesday night. San Diego took the series opener on Tuesday and is currently in the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

St. Louis has lost two straight but is leading the NL Central by 8½ games over the second-place Milwaukee Brewers. This should be another good one between two likely playoff squads, so make sure you read our in-depth preview of the contest before you make any bet online.

Let’s check the latest MLB picks, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Cardinals vs Padres. We’ve plenty of MLB predictions for you to consider.

Cardinals Having Trouble Scoring

Two of the best hitters in the National League are in the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup, yet they have managed just one run over the last three games – and that run came in the 11th inning of a win on Saturday over the Cincinnati Reds. St. Louis has a very balanced lineup but just has not been able to put anything together over the last few games.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt was 1-for-4 with a double on Tuesday after going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts on Sunday. Goldschmidt is second in baseball with a .322 batting average, ranks fourth in the majors with 112 RBIs and is tied for seventh in home runs with 35.

Third baseman Nolan Arenado has also hit a cold spell, going 1-for-10 over the last three games. Arenado is batting .296 with 40 doubles, a triple, 29 home runs, 98 RBIs and 70 runs scored.

Right-hander Miles Mikolas will get the start for Wednesday’s contest. The 34-year-old is 11-12 with a 3.46 ERA in 30 starts, striking out 138 in 187⅓ innings. He’s coming off a loss to the Reds on Thursday in which he went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits, including two home runs, while striking out three and walking three.

Padres Focused On Playoff Spot

The San Diego Padres could be scoreboard watching, hoping for other teams to help them clinch a playoff spot, but they prefer to take care of their own business. San Diego did that on Tuesday night, cruising to a 5-0 win that clinched a winning record and put the Padres a step closer to a spot in the postseason.

“Everyone’s living and dying pitch to pitch,” San Diego pitcher Mike Clevinger said after Tuesday’s win. “That’s how we need to stay, with the same mentality. We’re not worried about tomorrow, we’re not worried about the standings, let’s just get this pitch, let’s win this at-bat, let’s make this play in the outfield. That’s kind of how we’ve been rolling.”

Second baseman Jake Cronenworth was 1-for-4 with a two-run single that got the Padres started on Tuesday night. Cronenworth is batting .241 with 27 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 77 RBIs and 84 runs scored.

San Diego will hand the ball to left-hander Blake Snell for Wednesday’s contest. Snell is 7 -9 with a 3.85 ERA in 21 starts, striking out 146 in 110 innings. He got the win in his last outing, going seven innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday and allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking none.

Cardinals vs Padres Head-To-Head

The St. Louis Cardinals have the lead in the season series 3-1 despite Tuesday’s loss after sweeping the San Diego Padres in an earlier series at Busch Stadium. The two teams split six games last season, with the home team sweeping each series.

The Cardinals haven’t won a game at Petco Park since 2020. The MLB lines for the second game of this series don’t anticipate the Cardinals’ luck changing, giving the Padres the edge.
