Picks, Prediction for Cardinals vs Reds on Tuesday, May 23

NL Central Rivals Collide

The Cincinnati Reds will look to break even with the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central when they meet in the second game of a three-game series. The Reds are tied with the Cardinals for last place in the division after beating St. Louis in the series opener, but MLB odds have the Cardinals as a favorite in game two.

Cardinals Can’t Come Back

Though St. Louis scored a run in the eighth inning to force extra innings, it couldn’t convert in the final two innings to pull off a comeback.

Picks, Predictions for Cardinals vs Reds on Tuesday, May 23

The Cardinals scored three runs in the second inning off a Paul DeJong homer, but after they tied it up in the eighth at 5-5, their offense stalled out, finishing with seven hits.

St. Louis had multiple chances to score in the ninth and 10th innings, with the bases loaded in the ninth and two runners on in the 10th, but it failed to score any of them. The Cardinals stranded 12 runners.

The Cardinals have the sixth-best batting average in the MLB at .263 while their offense has been key in winning 11 of their last 14 games. They’ll try to get back to that in the second game of the series.

Reds Hang On

The Cincinnati Reds were able to end a four-game losing skid after defeating the Cardinals in extra innings.

The Reds took an early lead scoring four runs in the first three innings, led by Spencer Steer, who scored a two-run homer, and they were able to hold off the Cardinals in the final two innings to get the win.

Steer also scored the final run in the 10th inning for the win, but the Reds’ relievers also held off the Cardinals, throwing five strikeouts in the final two innings to allow no hits or runs.

The Reds will hope to have another solid performance when they try to win the series in game two against the Cardinals.

Starting Pitchers

Adam Wainwright (1-0, 5.74 ERA) vs. Graham Ashcraft (2-2, 4.84)

Wainwright hasn’t had the strongest start to his 2023 season. In three starts, he has allowed 13 runs in 15⅔ innings. In his last outing, Wainwright had one strikeout and allowed two earned runs in 5 ⅔ innings pitched.

Ashcraft hasn’t been the greatest starter for the Reds either. After a strong April in which Ashcraft recorded a 2.10 ERA, his pitching has dropped in May as he has allowed 19 runs in 18⅓ innings for a 9.33 ERA. If Ashcraft’s play continues to suffer, the Cardinals should be a strong MLB live betting pick to get back on track offensively.

Cardinals vs Reds Head-to-Head

The Cardinals and Reds met 19 times last year, with the last meeting a five-game series in mid-September in St. Louis, where the Cardinals won the series three games to two. St, Louis was 12-7 against the Reds in 2022.

Cardinals vs Reds Betting Lines

Over/Under Pick

The Cardinals and Reds hit the 10-run over in their series opener, and with both starting pitchers not bringing much confidence after their recent outings, the two should combine to hit the over on the 10½-run total from MLB lines once again.

Pick: Over 10½

Moneyline Pick

After a close series opener where the Cardinals’ offense stalled out, St. Louis should get back on track offensively against a starting pitcher who has struggled in recent games, helping the Cardinals to win the second game of the series.

Pick: Cardinals -140
