Picks, Prediction for Cardinals vs Reds on Wednesday, May 24

The St. Louis Cardinals are starting to find their mojo. Among the many MLB picks to win the National League Central, the team was awful to start the year. They’ve worked their way up to a 22-28 record after starting the year 10-24.

They should be able to keep moving toward .500 as on Wednesday when they face a Cincinnati Reds team that’s lost seven out of their last nine games. Are the Cardinals the best bet in this matchup?

Cardinals Finally Playing As Expected

Their 10-24 start wasn’t exactly what many who bet online were expecting. However, the St. Louis Cardinals ripped off 12 wins in their last 16 games to get back on track.

Paul Goldschmidt looks like he’s getting hot. During their Tuesday win over the Reds, Goldschmidt crushed two home runs in his first two at-bats. He’s now 32nd in the league in batting average.

If he keeps swinging a hot stick, the Cards should continue to be reliable versus the MLB odds.

Reds Continue to Slip

The Reds are fifth in the NL Central and are just one game back of the Cardinals, but it feels like their season is already in the dumps. They watched their poor play slip into Tuesday as they lost to the Cardinals.

Starter Graham Ashcraft was dismantled once again, which is becoming a common trend. He’s been a good pitcher to go against on the MLB betting lines recently.

The Reds will turn to Ben Lively for Wednesday’s game. Underwhelming pitching and below-average at-bats have been a bad combination for Cincinnati.

Starting Pitchers

Steven Matz (0-5, 5.05 ERA) vs Ben Lively (1-2, 2.45)

Steven Matz will hit the mound for the Cardinals. He has had a really underwhelming year. Coming into this game, he’s pitched to an 0-5 record with a 5.05 ERA.

Looking back at his matchups with the Reds, he hasn’t allowed over three runs in his last four career starts against them. Maybe this is the matchup where he turns his season around.

Ben Lively will get the nod on the other end. Lively hasn’t seen much action, pitching in just 11 innings. However, he’s been effective for them in that limited action.

He’s given up just three runs total in that stretch, with his runs allowed having increased in each of his three appearances.

His first showing was a shutout, followed by a one-run and a two-run showing. This pitching matchup is a toss-up in the sportsbook.

Cardinals vs Reds Head-to Head

These teams are very well-matched. In the past three seasons, the Cardinals hold a narrow series lead over the Reds, winning 22 of 40 games.

Cardinals vs Reds Betting Lines

Over/Under Pick

The overlooks are good in this matchup. Neither of these teams has boasted stellar pitching throughout the season.

On top of that, it was brought up by a few players on both teams that hitting seems to be easier at Great American Ball Park, which could inflate the scoring even more. The last two games between these teams played at this park have seen a combined total of 24 runs.

Pick: Over 11 (+100)

Moneyline Pick

The Cardinals are listed as the favorite and live betting might be the better option than betting them before the game. On paper, though, they look to be the team to roll with here, but they don’t have a very good starter on the bump.

As a team, they’ve been significantly better than the Reds lately and should pull away with a second straight victory against them.

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals -151
