Yankees, White Sox See Series Move to Chicago

The New York Yankees try to avoid a second straight loss when they take on the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a three-game weekend series on Saturday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

The Yankees dropped the opening game of this series in Thursday night’s Field of Dreams game in Iowa. New York is 63-52 and in third place in the AL East, trailing the second-place Boston Red Sox by 2½ games and leading the fourth-place Toronto Blue Jays by a game.

Chicago White Sox snapped a two-game losing streak with Thursday night’s win, improving to 68-48. The White Sox sit atop the AL Central standings, holding an 11-game cushion on the second-place Cleveland Indians.

MLB odds have the White Sox with a moneyline of -140, while the Yankees are listed at +125. The over/under has been set at 8½ runs.

In The Hunt

The Yankees are in the thick of the American League Wild-Card race, trailing the Oakland Athletics by 3½ games and the Red Sox by 2½ games. New York will face Boston in a three-game series next week.

Right-hander Jameson Taillon will make his 23rd start. The 29-year-old is 7-4 with a 3.82 ERA, striking out 112 and walking 34 in 113 innings.

Taillon has one start against the White Sox this season, going five shutout innings on May 23 and allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking two, taking a no-decision in a 5-4 Yankees win. Taillon has won his last six decisions but didn’t record one in his last start against Kansas City on Monday, going six innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out four and walking two.

The Yankees almost had a movie-like finish to Thursday’s game, with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton each hitting two-run home runs in the top of the ninth to give New York the lead. Judge actually had two home runs in the contest, giving him a team-high 25.

The All-Star also leads New York with a .282 batting average, 59 RBIs, and 59 runs scored. He’s batting .467 against Chicago, driving in six runs and scoring five times.

Stanton’s home run was his 18th, though he’s only hit four of those since July 1. Stanton is batting .259 with 12 doubles, 56 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

Hollywood Ending

Shortstop Tim Anderson has been the White Sox’s most consistent hitter, leading the team with a .300 batting average. He also had home runs in back-to-back games earlier this week, but his biggest blast came in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday night.

“It’s over. Once I made contact, I knew it was over. I knew it was out,” Anderson said after Thursday’s win. “These are the moments you want to be in. These big games like this, this is the time to show up.”

Anderson enters on a four-game hit streak, going 9-for-19 over that span with two doubles, three home runs, six RBIs, and six runs scored. He has 24 doubles, 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 72 runs scored this season.

First baseman Jose Abreu started the fireworks on Thursday with his second home run in three days. Abreu leads the White Sox with 23 home runs and is tied for second in baseball with 85 RBIs.

Right-hander Dylan Cease will get the start. He’s 9-6 with a 3.99 ERA, striking out 159 and walking 49 in 119⅔ innings.

The 25-year-old struggled in his previous start against the Yankees, going 4⅓ innings and allowing five runs on five hits while striking out six and walking four. He’s 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two August starts, including a win over the Cubs on Sunday in which he went five innings and gave up three runs on five hits while striking out 10 and walking three.

White Sox Win Again

We might not see all of the ninth-inning heroics that we did on Thursday night, but there will be some offense in Chicago on Saturday night. The White Sox have more potential big bats to turn to and should pull out another win in this one.
