It’s gut-check time for the Chicago Cubs as they desperately need a win to help keep their playoff aspirations alive. It’s good for Chicago that the Milwaukee Brewers don’t have the same motivation to win. With two games left in the regular season, the Brewers are already set for the postseason.

The Chicago Cubs are in a dead heat with the Cincinnati Reds for fourth place in the NL Wild Card race behind the Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Philadelphia Phillies have already clinched the first berth.

Confounding MLB Odds

The sportsbooks don’t seem to care that the Cubs are down to their last life, and the Brewers are a below-average team because Milwaukee is favored at -108 on the moneyline. With their backs up against the wall and Jordan Wicks on the mound, I’m not sure I agree with the MLB lines.

The Cubs team are 5-1 straight up and 4-2 ATS when Wicks starts, and his stats are a little worse than they should be due to one start at Coors Field and one at Chase Field. Those stadiums annually rank among the top hitter-friendly ballparks in the MLB due to altitude and heat.

I like the Cubs’ chances Saturday against LHP Eric Lauer for two reasons. One, their offense is hitting the ball well, with 17 runs combined in their previous four games. The other is that the Cubs hit lefties very well, with the second most runs against southpaw pitching.

Lauer also allowed six earned runs, including three home runs, in his last start before going on the IL. He is returning tonight after allowing six home runs, 24 walks, and 25 runs in 44 innings in AAA. Those are not great numbers and not the kind of stats I trust to bet on baseball games.

Considering the matchup that the Cubs have, there are two MLB bets I like in this game. They make for a juicy parlay if you want to go that route.

The first is for the Cubs to win outright at -102, with Wicks leading the Charge. The Cubs need this victory, and the Brewers, despite winning three in a row, are a rudderless ship with a bad pitcher on the mound.

I also like the total in this game to go Over 8.5 runs (-120). The Cubs will score on Lauer. I do not doubt that. But the Cubs’ pitching hasn’t been great during their current road trip, with 22 runs surrendered in their last four games.
