Highly-Anticipated Debut Falls Flat
The Chicago Cubs were really looking forward to Wade Miley’s 2022 pitching debut, but it was not to be. The San Diego Padres were not fooled by the crafty veteran in his Chicago debut. San Diego scored three runs (five hits) in just three innings against Miley.
Neither was Mike Clevinger as sharp as he hoped to be in his second San Diego start of the season, but the Padres found sufficient offense in a 5-4 win Tuesday night.
Cubs Don’t Have Offense
The Chicago Cubs were just short Tuesday night in Wade Miley’s 2022 debut. Miley didn’t really help with his poor performance, but the offense did not capitalize.
Chicago went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position Tuesday. The Cubs need timelier hitting to help them get over the hump.
It is a good thing that Kyle Hendricks was able to give the bullpen basically a night off Monday, because the ‘en was needed Tuesday. Miley only lasted three innings on a limited pitch count, while struggling a bit with his command. That was evidenced by five walks.
The depleted Cub bullpen will need to figure out how to pitch when the game is close. Preserving the leads would not be a bad thing,
The Cubs did manage to cover the runline in the loss Tuesday. They are staying in games, but can’t seem to find the ability to get over the hump. Injuries continue to amount, with outfielder Seiya Suzuki (ankle) being scratched Tuesday and second baseman Nick Madrigal (back) heading to the IL.
Padre Bats Secure Win
A night after being stifled by Kyle Hendricks, the San Diego Padres bats came alive, with five runs on 11 hits. San Diego also went 5-for-12 in runners in scoring position.
The Padres will send Nick Martinez to the mound Wednesday. After a few years of playing internationally, Martinez has shown that he can compete again here in the states.
Though Martinez has had some inconsistent starts, he has shown some flashes of brilliance. The one downside is that he seems to be long-ball prone pitching at home in Petco Park. Luckily for him, the Cubs are not known for hitting it out anymore.
The Padres have struggled to cover the runline as of late, while not staying in losing games and barely winning games in which they were favored The Padres need to get it together and start scoring some runs.
These close Padre games will definitely wear on the bullpen in such a long season if they are not able to get a break from time to time.
Cubs vs Padres Head-to-Head
The Padres evened the 2022 season series at a win each Tuesday night, but they should be handling the struggling Cubs with more ease than this. Look for the Padres to get hot in the afternoon rubber match Wednesday before a day off for both teams.
The Cubs have tabbed Keegan Thompson to make his first start (eighth appearance) of the season Wednesday, opposing Martinez. Thompson, a right-hander, is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA. A few injured Padres have recently come off the injured list, so don’t be surprised if there are some fireworks that come from the offense.
