Los Angeles Eyeing Another Big Season

After winning 111 games last season, the postseason did not go according to plan for the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing in the National League Division Series. Furthermore, for the first time in a while, the team is not the MLB odds-on favorite to win the World Series.

The Dodgers will host the Arizona Diamondbacks for Opening Day on Thursday, a team trying to compete in a stacked National League West Division. The Diamondbacks are still rebuilding, but their young team could make them interesting this season.

Both starting pitchers will get their first Opening Day nod but are elite, finishing in the top five of the NL Cy Young race last season.

Diamondbacks Want to Show Growth

Zac Gallen will be on the mound to start the D-Backs season after looking impressive in 2022. He was fifth in the Cy Young race, posting the highest WHIP in the NL. There is some concern about him possibly having a down season because after having a solid 2020, he followed that by struggling in 2021. However, last season, he showed enough to be considered a top pitcher in the league.

The rest of the pitching in 2022 was not great, with a team ERA of 4.25, the eighth-worst in the league. That is part of why the Diamondbacks’ MLB lines are heavily leaving toward them missing the playoffs.

Arizona was not much better at the plate, with the fifth-worst batting average last season. However, this is where the youth on the roster can make a difference. Especially Corbin Carroll, one of the favorites in the sportsbooks to win NL Rookie of the Year.

Carroll had a very impressive spring training with a batting average of .340, five stolen bases, three triples and seven RBIs. He could be a big part of the D-Backs showing they might be a hard team to beat this season.

New Look for Dodgers Roster

This offseason for the Dodgers was uncharacteristic, letting big players leave such as Trea Turner, Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner. They then didn’t do much to replenish the roster, banking on the team’s farm system and depth to remain afloat.

However, MLB news of second baseman Gavin Lux and starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin getting injured will test Los Angeles’ depth early. The lack of offseason moves and mounting injuries heading into the season are a big reason some bettors are hesitant, with the Dodgers not being a foregone conclusion for MLB picks.

For the first time in a while, question marks surround a team that has dominated the league. There is still a lot of talent on the roster, with Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman possibilities to be NL MVPs, and the starting rotation remaining elite, headlined by Clayton Kershaw.

Although Kershaw is among the best pitchers in league history, he will not be on the mound for Opening Day. That honor will be given to Julio Urías, who led the majors in ERA last season and finished third in the Cy Young race.

With two aces on the mound along with the rust being carried over from spring training, both offenses will struggle to put runs on the board.

Even with the Diamondbacks seemingly having some notable improvements in the batting order, there are still a lot of uncertainties. The Dodgers have many more question marks than usual, but they have the history and talent to rely on. Los Angeles should be able to win this game, pushing just enough runs across.
