Padres Tied Atop NL West
The San Diego Padres try for a second straight win against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks when the two National League West rivals play the second of a three-game series on Tuesday night. San Diego took the opener to move just percentage points behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the division standings.
Arizona lost for the second time in three games with Monday’s setback and is fourth place in the division, just a game ahead of the last-place Colorado Rockies. These two teams are very familiar with each other, so read our in-depth preview of the contest to get a better feel on how you should make your bet online.
Hot-And-Cold Offense Dooming Diamondbacks
In two of their last three games, the Arizona Diamondbacks have scored just one run. The game in between those losses was a seven-run outburst that led to a win. Unfortunately, the offense has been inconsistent for much of this season, which helps explain the team’s sub-.500 record.
First baseman Christian Walker drove in the team’s only run on Monday night with a sacrifice fly, giving him 36 RBIs. Walker is batting just .199, but when he’s good – like he was on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins – he’s good. He had two home runs in that game, helping the team to a win. Walker has 10 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs and 30 runs scored.
Outfielder Daulton Varsho has shown glimpses of solid play at the plate but he’s been – you guessed it – inconsistent. Varsho is batting .248 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 28 RBis and 32 runs scored.
Right-hander Zac Gallen will make his 13th start in Tuesday’s contest. Gallen is 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA, striking out 60 and walking 16 in 65 innings. He’s 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in three June starts, though he got a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds in his last start after allowing two run on two hits over seven innings on Wednesday.
Short-Handed Padres End Slide
The team’s manager is out with COVID-19 and its best player is sidelined with a sprained ankle, but the San Diego Padres snapped a three-game losing streak in Monday’s series opener. Veteran hurler Yu Darvish came up with a big effort in the win, allowing just one run over seven innings to help the team overcome the losses of manager Bob Melvin and third baseman Manny Machado.
“It means a lot to the team. After losing Manny you obviously want to come out strong,” Darvish said through an interpreter after Monday’s win. “I think we were able to do that,”
Machado suffered a sprained ankle during Sunday’s loss to the Colorado Rockies, though the team is hopeful he won’t have to go on the injured list. Machado has been one of the top hitters in baseball, batting .328 with 17 doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 46 RBIs and 48 runs scored.
Shortstop Jake Cronenworth tried to pick up some of the slack on Monday with his seventh home run. Cronenworth is batting .259 with 18 doubles, two triples, 41 RBIs and 43 runs scored.
San Diego will have left-hander Sean Manaea on the mound for Tuesday’s contest. Manaea is 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA in his first season with the Padres, striking out 76 in 73 innings over 12 starts. Manaea is coming off a rough start against the Chicago Cubs, as he went just four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, including two home runs, while striking out five and walking one.
Diamondbacks vs Padres Head-To-Head
The San Diego Padres have now won four straight from the Arizona Diamondbacks, having taken the final three games of the first series in early April. San Diego was 7-3 against the Diamondbacks at home in 2021 and took five of seven at Petco Park against Arizona in 2020.
The Diamondbacks haven’t won the season series between these two division rivals since the 2019 campaign, when they won 11 of 19 meetings. As you might expect, the MLB lines for the second game of the series are also favoring the Padres to come out on top.

Diamondbacks vs Padres Prediction
The San Diego Padres have been showing their depth all season by contending without All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr., and now they’re trying to do it again until Machado can return. The Arizona Diamondbacks just don’t have the offense to stay with the Padres in this one.
