Division Rivals Enter Off Losses
The Colorado Rockies try to improve their lost in the NL West standings Friday night, beginning a three-game series with the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers in their last series, Colorado still sits in last place. Arizona is in fourth place in the division. These two teams are very familiar with one another. Read our in-depth preview for the series opener before deciding how to make your bet online.
Diamondbacks Silent In Recent Loss
The Arizona Diamondbacks scored 18 runs in a brief two-game win streak prior to Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres. There, the offense faltered in a 4-0 loss, managing just three hits in the contest. It’s been a story for the Diamondbacks for much of the season, solid performances followed by rough outings. That’s a big reason the team is why they are hovering near .500.
“I think that’s the name of the game, right?” Diamondbacks’ third baseman Josh Rojas said after Wednesday’s loss. “You don’t get to carry over what you did yesterday into the next day. You’ve got to find a way to repeat what you did. Or if it’s a day like today, you have to go out and flush everything. That’s why you play 162 of them. It’s a constant battle, and you don’t get to carry over what you did one day into the next.”
First baseman Christian Walker leads the Diamondbacks with 19 home runs, but he’s also batting just .200. Walker went 0-for-12 over the last four, though he has 10 doubles, a triple, 39 RBIs and 36 runs scored this season.
Outfielder Daulton Varsho has also been solid, batting .231 with 14 doubles, 10 home runs, 32 RBIs and 34 runs scored. He went 0-for-8 in the two-game series with the Padres.
Righthander Merrill Kelly will make his 16th start of the season Friday night. Kelly is 6-5 with a 3.64 ERA, striking out 71 over 84 innings. Kelly is coming off a loss against the Detroit Tigers. In his six innings, he surrendered four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking one.
Rockies Eyeing Happy Home
The Colorado Rockies moved above .500 (21-20) at home, taking two out of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, they’re hoping to stay above the break-even mark against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Righthander Antonio Senzatela gets the nod for the series opener. Senzatela is 3-4 with a 4.66 ERA in 12 starts, striking out 33 over 58 innings. A loser in his last outing, lasting five innings against the Minnesota Twins last Saturday. He surrendered allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out six and with two walks..
Second baseman Brendan Rodgers was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs in Wednesday’s loss to LA. Rodgers is batting .266 with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
First baseman C.J. Cron has driven in a run in his last four, giving him 56 for the season, tied for fifth in the majors. Cron is batting .294 with 16 doubles, two triples, 17 home runs and 45 runs scored.
Diamondbacks vs Rockies Head-To-Head
The Arizona Diamondbacks took two-of-three when these teams squared off in Phoenix in early May. The season series between the two division rivals has been close, the Rockies holding a 26-25 edge since the start of 2019.
Colorado went 7-3 against Arizona at Coors Field last season. The MLB lines for Friday’s series opener have that trend continuing, with the Rockies getting the edge.
