Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Series Picks and Predictions 8/30

  • The Dodgers have the third-best record in the league after the All-Star break.
  • The Diamondbacks have the second-best record in the same span and sit just four games back in the NL West race.
  • The Diamondbacks have the best wRC in August and lead the league in runs per game.

The lead in the National League West could change this weekend if the Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t careful. They head to Phoenix to play the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are just four games back. Despite bolstering their roster and playing their best baseball all season, the Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres have the best two records since the All-Star break and continue to cut into LA’s lead.

The Diamondbacks pace the league in runs scored per game and wRC+ this month, making them a tempting MLB bet to win this series. The Dodgers need to get it together or their lead could slip away by the time you fire up your BBQ on Labor Day Monday.

The four-game set is nearly a pick’em at the BetUS sportsbook with the visiting Dodgers a slight favorite at -120 odds and the Diamondbacks at -110.

Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Series Breakdown

Game 1: Clayton Kershaw vs Zac Gallen

In past seasons, seeing Kershaw and Gallen going head-to-head would have been a pitching duel to get excited about. The pair are wildly talented, but neither is having a ton of success in 2024.

Kershaw has a mere 2-2 record on the year with a 3.72 ERA and an ugly 1.41 WHIP in 29 innings. He’s only allowed one home run, but his other stats are far lower than his talent level. The same goes for Gallen, who has a 3.65 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 116 innings. Neither has been horrible. Just more average than we have come to expect from the pair.

If you are looking for MLB prop picks in Game 1, note that Corbin Carroll is 5-for-8 with two home runs and four RBIs against Kershaw. Carroll is +700 to take Kershaw deep in the series opener.

Game 2: Gavin Stone vs. Merrill Kelly

Game 2 is probably the best pitching matchup of the series, with Gavin Stone and Merrill Kelly set to duel. Both have similar ERAs (3.33 & 3.98) and WHIPs (1.21 & 1.18), though Kelly is a perfect 4-0 on the season. However, if you are looking for a divergence in their results, it has to be noted that Kelly is having a rough August with a 6.75 ERA in his last three starts. He’s allowed a combined 10 runs in his last 11 innings pitched with five walks and nine strikeouts. This might be a good spot to add the Dodgers to your MLB picks.

Game 3: Jack Flaherty vs. Brandon Pfaadt

This might be the game to target the Diamondbacks to win, with Flaherty struggling against Arizona over his career. In 121 at-bats, the current Dodger roster has a robust .861 OPS with 10 XBHs. Joc Pederson in particular has had a lot of success with a .353 average and two home runs in 17 trips to the plate.

Game 4: Walker Buehler vs. Eduardo Rodriguez

If you want to bet online the Over in any of these games, save your money until Game 4. With Walker Buehler and Eduardo Rodriguez on the bump, this game could be an offensive clinic. Both starters have ERAs over 5.05, neither has more than two wins and their K/BB rates are similarly trash. As long as the offenses aren’t tuckered out after the weekend, expect fireworks on Monday night in the thin air of Phoenix.

Key Players in Prop Betting Markets

Here are a few names and relevant stats to consider for BetUS prop betting in the Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks series:

  • Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers): Shotime may have seen his average dip to .238 in August, but he’s still one of the most talented players ever to touch a bat and has four multi-hit games in his last five starts. Ohtani is -112 to have at least two total bases in Game 1.
  • Corbin Caroll (Diamondbacks): The D’Backs’ talented OF has a career .308 average against the Dodgers, including a .625 average against Kershaw, and has two home runs in eight at-bats. He’s also on a seven-game hitting streak, with two of those games being multi-hit efforts. He’s worth a shot at +141 MLB prop odds for another multi-hit game on Friday night.
