Reds on Four-Game Slide
The Los Angeles Dodgers try to stay on top in the National League West when they face the host Cincinnati Reds in the first of a three-game series on Tuesday night. Los Angeles has dropped two of its last three and is tied with the San Diego Padres atop the NL West standings. Cincinnati has lost four in a row and is in last place in the NL Central.
The Dodgers swept the four-game series between these teams earlier this season, but the Reds are hoping to turn that around at home. If you’re unsure how you want to bet online on Tuesday’s series opener, read our in-depth preview of the contest.
Kimbrel Struggles Reflect Dodgers’ Fortunes Of Late
The Los Angeles Dodgers are having trouble finishing games. Closer Craig Kimbrel continued to struggle on the mound on Sunday, allowing two runs in the ninth of a 5-3 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Kimbrel now has a 7.00 ERA over his last nine outings, which is certainly not ideal for a closer.
“I’m giving up runs, walking guys,” Kimbrel said after Sunday’s loss. “I’m not necessarily giving up a lot of hard-hit balls. But when you’re walking guys and then giving up singles and balls that aren’t hit so hard, runs are going to score. It seems like I’ve had quite a few outings where that happened.”
Right-hander Tony Gonsolin will try to make it easy on the Dodgers’ bullpen when he looks to keep his perfect record intact on Tuesday night. Gonsolin is 8-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 12 starts , striking out 60 in 63.1 innings of work. Gonsolin was outstanding in his last start, going 6.1 shutout innings against the Los Angeles Angels on June 14 and allowing just one hit while striking out six and walking two.
Los Angeles has outfielder Mookie Betts on the injured list due to a cracked rib, so they acquired outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations on Monday. Thompson is the brother of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson and previously played with the Dodgers in 2016 and 2017.
Shortstop Trea Turner has been one of the most consistent hitters in the game, batting .301 to lead the Dodgers. Turner has 15 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 49 RBIs (seventh in baseball) and 33 runs scored.
Home Hasn’t Been Happy for Reds
The Cincinnati Reds are coming off a three-game home sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend and have dropped five straight at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati is just 12-20 at home, though it is scoring much more at home than on the road (5.7 runs compared to 3.1).
Shortstop Kyle Farmer leads the Reds with a .282 batting average and 38 RBIs, though he’s coming off an 0-for-4 outing on Sunday that snapped his six-game hitting streak. Farmer has 14 doubles, five home runs and 25 runs scored.
The top power hitter for Cincinnati has been third baseman Brandon Drury, whose 14 home runs are tied for 18th in baseball. Drury is batting .268 with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and 42 runs scored, which is tied for 13th in the majors.
RIght-hander Tyler Mahle will make his 15th start in Tuesday’s series opener. Mahle is 2-5 with a 4.46 ERA, recording 86 strikeouts and 30 walks in 74.2 innings. Mahle has been great in three June starts despite failing to get a decision, putting up a 1.71 ERA over 21 innings. He’s coming off a nine-inning shutout stint against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 14 in which he allowed three hits while striking out 12 and walking none.
Dodgers vs Reds Head-To-Head
The Los Angeles Dodgers took the first four meetings at Dodger Stadium in April. These two teams split a six-game season series a year ago, with the road team going 2-1 in each series.
The Cincinnati Reds are hoping for better results at home in this series after going just 2-4 at home against the Dodgers over the previous two series at Great American Ball Park. The MLB lines for the series opener give the edge to the visiting Dodgers to continue their earlier success against the Reds.

Dodgers vs Reds Prediction
While Mahle has been pitching great of late, he’s going to need some offensive production from his Cincinnati Reds teammates. That’s going to be hard to come by against Gonsolin, who will help the Los Angeles Dodgers to the series-opening victory.
