The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet in the World Series for the first time since 1981. Gerrit Cole getts the start for the Yankees in Friday night’s series opener while Jack Flaherty will be going for the Dodgers. The MLB odds favor the host Dodgers to strike first in the matchup between the No. 1 seeds in the American League and National League.

The Dodgers took two of three games from the Yankees in the lone series between them during the regular season. The Yankees won the series finale 6-4 to avoid being swept at home by the Dodgers. Over the last two seasons, the teams split six games with the road team winning four of the six games.

The MLB betting line has the Dodgers priced at -124 to win Game 1 compared to +113 odds for the Yankees. The +164 odds for the Dodgers to cover the 1.5 run line is sure to draw some action.

When looking at the MLB futures odds, the Dodgers are priced at -135 in the odds of winning the World Series with the Yankees offering value at +105 in the championship odds.

World Series Game 1 Betting Keys

Ohtani, Judge Ready for the Bright Lights

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees have each won MVP awards and put up gaudy numbers in the regular season in recent years. However, this is the World Series debut for both of them.

Ohtani is batting .286 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in this year’s playoffs. After stealing 59 bases during the regular season to become the first MLB player with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season, Ohtani has yet to steal a base in this year’s playoffs.

Judge is batting just .161 with two home runs and 13 strikeouts in nine playoff games in 2024.

Both players will be popular picks in the World Series player prop odds. Ohtani is +220 and Judge +400 to be named World Series MVP. For Game 1, bet on Judge to break out of his slump against Flaherty.

Bet This Pick: Aaron Judge to Have 2+ Runs and RBIs (+104)

Who has Edge in Pitching Matchup?

Flaherty is 2-5 in his postseason career. He did get the win with seven shutout innings against the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series. However, he surrendered eight hits and 12 runs in his other two starts in this year’s playoffs.

The last time that Flaherty faced the Yankees was in 2023, when he allowed four hits and no runs with four strikeouts in six innings in an 11-4 win as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cole has an 11-6 postseason record. Four of those wins came during Houston’s run to the 2019 World Series title. In four years with the Yankees, he is 4-2 in the playoffs with a 3.44 ERA. The Yankees went 0-4 in his four starts against National League teams during the regular season.

Tommy Kahnle and Tim Mayza have not allowed a run in eight combined playoff appearances this year while Luke Weaver has four saves for the Yankees.

Evan Phillips, Ben Casparius and Alex Vesia have combined to throw 14 scoreless innings out of the Dodgers bullpen. That could factor into the MLB playoff predictions as we like the Dodgers to take care of business in Game 1.

Bet on the Dodgers (-124) in Game 1

Can Yankees Defy Odds as Rare Playoff Underdog?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 4-2 in this year’s playoffs when listed by the sports betting odds as the home favorite. They covered against the MLB run line in each of the four victories.

Dating back to the 2021 season, the Dodgers have seen 12 of their last 14 postseason games as a home favorite go over the total.

This is the first time since 2022 that the Yankees head into a postseason game as an underdog. The Yankees have lost four consecutive postseason games as the road underdog.

Get Your Parlays Picks Ready

There are some intriguing options to make MLB player prop bets or to set up a parlay in the series opener.

We like Anthony Rizzo of the Yankees at +131 to have at least one run + RBI. Mookie Betts of the Dodgers already has 10 runs and 12 RBIs in the first 11 games. Take the +156 odds for Betts to have at least two runs + RBIs.

Max Muncy of Los Angeles has already matched his postseason high with three home runs so consider the -118 sports betting odds for Muncy to have one run + RBI for the Dodgers.

You can always keep it simple and go with Game 1 to land over the 8½-run total for your MLB picks.

Bet this Pick: Game 1 to Land Over the 8½ (-110)
