Best MLB Player Props Today

Tigers SP Jack Flaherty Over 6½ Strikeouts

I’m firing on a strikeout prop with our first MLB bet tonight. I have faded the Red Sox all season, which has paid off. The Detroit Tigers will send 28-year-old righty Jack Flaherty to the bump against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in the series opener. Flaherty is already in his ninth MLB season! He was a Cy Young candidate in his first few seasons in the bigs but suffered injuries that threw a wrench in his upward trajectory. His numbers fell off quite a bit since the 2020- Covid season, but he has shown flashes here in 2024; he still is a top-end rotation arm, and the Tigers desperately need him to be just that.

Flaherty has a 98 Stuff+ this season, which is just about average in MLB among qualified pitchers. He is in the 97th percentile in WHIFF% and the 95th percentile in K%. He has struck out at least seven in three consecutive starts and in seven of ten starts this season. Flaherty is finally healthy again and owns the second-best strikeout rate among starting pitchers across the league!

Boston’s lineup is inferior outside of Rafael Devers. The Red Sox have the third-highest K% and sixth-highest WHIFF% in MLB. Boston has the third-most strikeouts in MLB, behind only the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. I would play this up to 7½ but prefer to pay the juice in case he finishes with 7 K’s on the night! Bank on Flaherty to fan at least seven Red Sox batters tonight.

Red Sox SP Nick Pivetta Over 5½ Strikeouts

With our next pick, we’re going to stay in the same game at Fenway Park and look at the Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta. I’ve yet to back Pivetta this season, but it’s time we begin to trust the 31-year-old right-hander. Pivetta suffered a scare back in April with an elbow strain, but since his return to the Red Sox rotation earlier this month, he has not had any setbacks with the elbow.

Pivetta has made six starts this season and has a 4.20 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. His strikeout numbers look like this in his six starts in 2024: 3, 8, 8, 1, 3, and 10. He has exceeded this line in half of his outings so far. What is incredible about Pivetta is that this is his ninth MLB season, and Boston bounced him from the bullpen to the starting rotation last season. He has a 138 Stuff+ rating, which is the highest in MLB! Since last summer, he ranks third in the league in strikeout rate among starting pitchers. His pitch arsenal of velocity and movement is comparable to Trevor Bauer and Justin Verlander in the 2018 season, where each was a finalist in AL Cy Young voting!

He will face a Tigers lineup just below league average in strikeouts. Detroit ranks tenth in K % and has the 11th most strikeouts. The Tigers just struck out nine times against Paul Skenes yesterday. Count on Pivetta to put away at least six Tigers tonight.

Angels SP Patrick Sandoval Over 4½ Hits Allowed

I’ve been fading the Los Angeles Angels all season long, and I’m going right back to it tonight against the red-hot Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees. I have trusted the Bronx Bombers in both games against the Angels, and they got to Griffin Canning in the opener, but they stumbled a bit against Tyler Anderson last night. The umpires bailed Anderson out in the first inning with a terrible call when they tried to pay homage to Angel Hernandez, who retired earlier this week.

However, despite the quiet night from the bats on Wednesday, this is a rinse and repeat for me for tonight’s matchup! The Yanks are in the middle of a 10-day West Coast road trip and continue this series against the Halos. The Los Angeles Angels are coming off a poor stretch of games that saw them get swept by the Guardians. Somehow, the Angels stole the series opener from New York on Tuesday. The Yankees took the second game of the series in a close one leaving tonight as the rubber game.

Los Angeles will send left-hander Patrick Sandoval to the mound tonight. The southpaw has made 11 starts this season and allowed at least five hits in six. He owns a high ERA of 5.60 and 1.55 WHIP in his sixth MLB season. He has a 99 Stuff+ rating, which suggests he has a below-average arm. Sandoval has good numbers against the Yankees in three career starts against them, but the underlying metrics suggest that Sandoval is an average arm.

The Bronx Bombers are back and continue to beat up starting pitchers. The Yankees have the highest OPS in the league (.770). The Bombers have the second-highest overall batting average in May (.265) and the highest OPS (.806). Judge has been on a tear this month, and Anthony Volpe is currently riding a 21-game hit streak!

New York has at least five hits against 14 of their last 16 starting pitchers faced. The Yankees lead the league with 83 homers. Count on the Yankees early tonight and bet them at the sportsbook.
