Arizona Looks to Complete Sweep of Reeling San Francisco

Giants Mired in Six-Game Slide

The Arizona Diamondbacks try to win their third straight when they face the visiting San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday night. Arizona has won the first two games of the series rather easily, pulling to within four games of the third-place Giants in the National League West standings.

San Francisco has lost six straight contests and is five games behind the second-place San Diego Padres. Both teams are fighting for position for possible wild card runs, so this one should be another intense contest. Make sure you read our in-depth preview of the series finale before you decide how to bet online.

Let’s check the latest MLB news, stats, injury reports, and MLB odds for Giants vs Diamondbacks. We’ve plenty of MLB picks & predictions.

Giants Struggling on Offense

The San Francisco Giants offense has not been what it was a year ago, and that has shown up quite a bit during the team’s current six-game losing streak. Tuesday night saw the team manage just two runs on six hits, with shortstop Brandon Crawford’s double being the only extra-base hit.

Crawford was back in the lineup for the first time on Tuesday after missing time on the injured list due to left knee inflammation. He went 1-for-4 in the contest and is batting .225 with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 30 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Outfielder Joc Pederson drove in the Giants’ first run in Tuesday’s loss with a sacrifice fly. Pederson is batting .274 with 10 doubles, 17 home runs, 41 RBIs, and 34 runs scored.

San Francisco will have right-hander Alex Cobb on the mound for the series finale. Cobb is 3-3 with a 4.59 ERA in 11 starts, recording 56 strikeouts in 51 innings. He threw five scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox in his last start on Friday, allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking one.

Diamondbacks Wake Up Late For Comeback Win

Down by a run heading to the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks were searching for a spark. They definitely got it in the eighth, scoring five runs on three hits — the biggest being a three-run home run by Daulton Varsho in the come-from-behind win. The rally was started by a two-strike leadoff bunt for a single against the shift by Josh Rojas.

The scariest part is when you bunt it foul and you look like an idiot,” Rojas said after Tuesday’s win. “If you can get past that and you look at strictly the numbers and you get half of them in play, you’re increasing your batting average from .100 or .200 to now .500 or .600.

Rojas is batting .272 after getting the single in his only plate appearance on Tuesday. The third baseman has nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, 19 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Varsho had his second home run in four games, giving him 12. Varsho is batting .247 with 15 doubles, 41 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

Right-hander Merrill Kelly will make his 17th start for Arizona on Wednesday. Kelly is 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA, striking out 74 in 91 innings. He’s coming off a win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday, going seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out three and walking one.

Giants vs Diamondbacks Head-To-Head

The Arizona Diamondbacks have already matched their win total against the San Francisco Giants in each of the last two seasons with two victories in this series. San Francisco won the season series 17-2 a season ago and 8-2 in 2020.

Both of the Diamondbacks’ wins last season came at Chase Field, though the Giants have won the majority of the games played at that venue for the past four seasons. The MLB lines for Wednesday’s series finale are favoring the Giants to earn at least one win in this series.
