Los Angeles Inching Closer to Clinching National League West
Rivalry Extremely One-Sided in 2022
After taking two of three from the San Diego Padres over the weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers entered Labor Day with a 19-game lead in the National League West. Their magic number to win the division for the ninth time in 10 years sits at nine, putting it well within reach over the next week or so.
The Dodgers have taken eight in a row against the fading San Francisco Giants, sweeping four-game sets in both July and August. That eight-game run matches their longest against the Giants since the teams moved to California in 1958. As Los Angeles looks to extend that streak to nine straight.
Let’s check the latest, stats, injury reports, and odds for Giants vs Dodgers. We’ve plenty of betting sports for you to consider.
Dodgers’ Bats Break Out
A little lull for the best offense in baseball appears to be over. After batting .167 and scoring a total of 12 runs in a 2-3 stretch, the Dodgers broke out the lumber this weekend with six home runs in two straight wins over the Padres.
Will Smith had two of the blasts and Mookie Betts hammered one while going 4-for-8 with four RBIs in the back-to-back routs that cut the magic number to single digits.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good spot,” manager Dave Roberts told the media. “The challenge is to go out there and play with urgency and keep the bar high.”
Roberts also noted how much this season’s virtual cakewalk to the division crown contrasts with the 2021 fight that went down to the last day of the regular season when the Giants held on to claim the title by one game.
“Every game did or die, it seemed like,” Roberts said.
That won’t be the case this month and Roberts will be able to do more playoff prep rather than playing to win down the stretch. But not yet, as his team has enjoyed sticking it to the Giants, claiming each of those eight straight wins by multiple runs.
That is a pretty definitive trend that might sway you toward a Dodgers run line bet at the sportsbook.
Andrew Heaney gets the nod in the opener of this three-game series. Over his last three starts, he has been electric in some ways (28 strikeouts, two walks) and not so much in others (six home runs allowed). A Giants offense that ranks 13th in the NL in OPS since the All-Star break could allow him to harness that dominant strain in his arsenal.
Giants Riding Rare Winning Streak
Although they won’t be able to do much damage to the Dodgers’ playoff aspirations, the San Francisco Giants took pleasure in hurting the postseason chances for another team with a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend.
Wilmer Flores walked off a 5-3 win Sunday with a two-run homer, giving San Francisco just its second home sweep since it took three straight from Los Angeles in early June. It also capped a great turnaround weekend for a team that had just endured a long slide.
“We lost seven straight before,” All-Star pitcher Carlos Rodon said of the recent skid that severely hampered the team’s remote chances of sneaking into a wild card spot. “It’s nice to still have fans in the stands.”
Logan Webb gets the start for the Giants on Monday. Webb has lost three straight starts, although he is unscored upon in 10.1 innings over his last two outings.
Those studying the MLB odds for a bet online will want to note that Webb has a 1.50 ERA over his last five starts. They’ll also want to note that the start before that run was a stinker against the Dodgers in which the right-hander gave up a season-high six runs in five innings.
Giants vs Dodgers Head-to-Head
Los Angeles Dodgers has taken all six meetings this year at home, another definitive trend to consider when deciding on some MLB picks.

Giants vs Dodgers Prediction
There are so many streaks to consider here. The Dodgers’ eight-game run against the Giants, all by two or more runs. The Dodgers’ six-game home winning streak against San Francisco’s three-game surge. Webb has three straight losses while compiling a scoreless streak of 10.1 innings.
Something somewhere has to give. All too often it’s that relentless Los Angeles offense that wins out, and we expect Betts and company to keep their foot on the gas until that division flag is raised. Go with the strong trends here until there’s a reason not to.
