Giants, Pirates on Different Tracks
The San Francisco Giants visit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday on the heels of a tough loss. Their recent defeat to the Kansas City Royals broke a five-game winning streak.
As for the Pirates, they’re at the opposite end of the momentum spectrum. They were on a nine-game losing streak before finally beating the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Giants Struggling With Consistency
Outside of their recent hot streak, San Francisco hasn’t been able to keep up strong numbers across the board. The Giants are 19th in the league when it comes to batting average and 19th in terms of team ERA.
Despite those team-wide averages, the team is still sitting at 35-27 and is in third place in a competitive National League West.
Carlos Rodon is expected to get the start in the series opener. He’s pitched well, but that hasn’t translated to many wins for the team.
If you bet online, note that while his 1.22 WHIP and 3.18 ERA are respectable, the team has actually dropped five of his last six starts. The main issue is run support as the Giants have averaged just 3.0 runs per game over his last six.
Rodon face the Pirates once last year. He pitched five innings while giving up just five hits and one earned run in a 6-3 win.
Pirates Eye Back-to-Back Wins
After finally breaking their losing streak, the Pirates hope to make it two straight. In order to get that done, Zach Thompson is will have to lead the way. He is a mediocre 3-4 with a below-average 4.50 ERA.
Thompson has performed better at home compared to on the road. His home ERA is down to 3.62, but it shoots up to 5.56 when he starts to travel.
What’s interesting is that the Pirates have fared well in his starts. The Pirates are 25-37 but they’ve actually won five of his last eight outings. They’ve scored 39 runs in those games, which is why they’ve done well in that span.

Giants vs Pirates Prediction
Looking at both of these teams’ recent history, it could be easy to roll with the Giants. San Francisco has been significantly better as of late, notably with its five-game winning streak.
The Pirates had lost nine straight before finally snapping out of it. The main question will be run support. The Pirates provide a lot more for Thompson than the Giants do for Rodon. That could be a reason for the Pirates to be a value play here.
