Guardians-Twins in Store for Low-Scoring Affair

The Cleveland Guardians (62-69) sit six games back from the first-place Minnesota Twins (68-63) in the American League Central. According to MLB odds, the Twins are the heavy favorite to win the division (-3000). After selling at the trade deadline, the Guardians have an underwhelming roster.

The upcoming three-game series could be Cleveland’s last hoorah. Will the Guardians cut Minnesota’s lead in the AL Central? Cleveland is 3-3 in its last six and comes off a surprising series win against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Twins are also 3-3 in the last six and defeated the Texas Rangers 3-1 over the weekend. The sportsbook is offering several intriguing lines for Game 1.

Guardians-Twins in Store for Low-Scoring Affair

Starting Pitchers

Xzavion Curry (3-2, 3.51 ERA) vs Kenta Maeda (3-7, 4.22)

Xzavion Curry has come out of the bullpen in 25 of 32 appearances. The rookie right-hander has shown off his versatility in August. Monday will be Curry’s fifth consecutive appearance as a starter. In his last four starts, he has a 5.50 ERA. Curry’s pitch count was steadily increasing until a rough start on Aug. 23. He pitched for only two innings with five allowed hits and three earned runs.

The Twins rank seventh in allowed runs per game, partially thanks to their deep starting rotation. Kenta Maeda is towards the bottom of the rotation but has pitched well since July. Maeda has a 3.14 ERA over his previous nine starts. The long ball has been a problem, though. Maeda has surrendered at least one home run in seven consecutive starts. This creates an enticing opportunity for MLB live betting.

Pick Polanco for Props

Minnesota ranks 22nd in batting average and hits per game. With an inconsistent lineup, it can be difficult to find intriguing props for the Twins’ batters. Second baseman Jorge Polanco has excelled in August. Take advantage of his hot streak.

Over his previous 14 games, Polanco is hitting .320 with a .410 on-base percentage (OBP). For comparison, he bats .252 with a .328 OBP in the 2023 season. Polanco comes off another impressive series, totalling six hits in 16 at-bats (.375) against the Rangers. He also has two hits in back-to-back games.

How can we turn this into a winning bet? MLB lines have Polanco at -210 to record a hit or more. This is likely to hit, but the profit would be underwhelming. How about +110 to go over 1½ bases?

Polanco has only one extra-base hit in his last nine games. However, he is drawing walks. He has four walks over his last five games. Polanco has reached at least two bases in four consecutive games.

Pick: Jorge Polanco Over 1½ Bases (+110)

Maeda Flourishing in Rivalry

Bettors have consistently cashed in on the under for the Guardians-Twins. The under is 6-1 in 2023’s matchups. Instead of wagering on the combined total, the under for Cleveland could be the best bet.

Maeda has shined in this rivalry. Over five outings, Maeda has a 2.51 ERA against the Guardians. Plus, he has held opponents to under three earned runs in six of his last nine starts.

Maeda has struggled with home runs. However, Cleveland ranks last in big flies per game. Maeda also averages 5.8 strikeouts against the Guardians. He has reached six Ks in four of five starts. Maeda is priced at +120 to go over 5½ strikeouts on Monday.

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Team Total Under 3½ (-115)
