You could go further and check out the MLB future specials to see the odds for the state of the 2022 World Series winner. Let’s run through the options for that particular bet and assess where the best value is:
California (+250)
Based on sheer numbers, California is the smartest choice for one particular state. Between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics, California has an MLB-high five teams.
So, at +250, you get the World Series odds for the three best teams in the loaded NL West and two non-contenders in the AL West. Because the Dodgers — at +500 — are the odds-on World Series favorites, California is a great option even against the field. San Diego and San Francisco are good teams that could certainly win the pennant in the National League.
New York (+375)
New York is the best bet on the MLB lines among the states with two teams. The New York Mets and New York Yankees are both feasible World Series picks in their own right so getting them at a combined +375 is a nice deal. There are definite risks with both and they are each in really tough divisions, but New York is a solid package deal.
Texas (+800); Illinois (+900)
Texas and Illinois probably aren’t the best states to take because, while they do have two teams, only one team in each state — the Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox — has legitimate title hopes. The Texas Rangers got a lot better this offseason but they don’t have much pitching while the Chicago Cubs are just getting started on what should be a time-consuming rebuild.
So, it might make more sense to just go with the Astros (+1000) or the White Sox (+1100) on their own if you’re betting online and like those teams.
Florida (+1400); Missouri (+2500); Pennsylvania (+3300); Ohio (+5000)
These are the rest of the two-team states. Of course, Florida is the smartest pick because the Tampa Bay Rays (+1600 on their own) are always a contender, even in the brutal AL East. Missouri has the St. Louis Cardinals (+2000) and Pennsylvania has the Philadelphia Phillies (+3300, same as the state odds). Ohio’s teams — the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians — are both huge longshots.
If anything, maybe Missouri is worth a take if you think the Cardinals are especially undervalued. But, this tier of teams might be in stay-away territory even with the great value.
Any Other State (+200)
Ah, the field. There is where Georgia (the Atlanta Braves are +1200), Massachusetts (the Boston Red Sox are +1800), Wisconsin (the Milwaukee Brewers are +1800), and even Canada (the Toronto Blue Jays are +1000) come into play.
As far as MLB picks go, this is probably the second-best choice after California. Getting all of these teams at plus-money is a coup. So, the ideal risk-averse strategy for this bet is just to go with “Any Other State” because you can double your money while also taking a good amount of the expected World Series contenders. It’s not as valuable a choice as California or New York but it’s a much broader hedge.
