Angels Look to Keep Bats Going

The Angels took out the Yankees 5-3 in Monday’s series opener as Shohei Ohtani hit his 26th home run in the first inning. The dual-threat star moved into a tie with Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the major league lead in home runs.

“That definitely sent the message,” Los Angeles manager Joe Maddon said. “It was just the right way for him to start his trip to New York.”

For Game 2, the Halos will hand the ball to Andrew Heaney. The southpaw starter allowed five earned runs on 10 hits, including a pair of homers, with 10 strikeouts in six innings of a 5-0 home loss against San Francisco in his last start. Heaney has allowed at least five earned runs twice in his last six starts, but also limited Kansas City and the Giants to one run in consecutive starts during the span.

Angels are 10-1 in their last 11 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.

Angels are 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.

Angels are 3-9 in their last 12 vs. American League East.

Yankees Need to Get Offense in Gear

The Yankees were on the wrong end of Monday’s two-run loss as starter Michael King allowed three runs on six hits with two walks, including Ohtani’s first-inning homer.

“The execution was bad,” King said of the home run. “I wanted to bounce it. But I also wanted to make it competitive. I didn’t want a take there. And it was one of those where he hadn’t seen my curveball yet. So I just said, ‘I’m going to rip a curveball.’ He’s a good strike curveball hitter or strike breaking-ball hitter in general. So I did not want to leave it in the strike zone, but I wanted to make it competitive, and it just hung.”

For Game 2, Jameson Taillon gets the start. The right-hander limited Kansas City to one earned run in 6.1 innings on five hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight after allowing five runs or more in their previous game.

Yankees are 5-11 in their last 16 games following a loss.

Yankees are 0-4 in their last four overall.

Angels Get Narrow Win Again

The Angels might be an uninspiring 4-10 in the last 14 meetings, but right now, the Yankees are struggling mightily to score and that makes Los Angeles the pick to record consecutive wins in this four-game set.

Ohtani is red-hot at the plate and the Angels have scored 11 combined runs over their last two outings. On the flip side of the coin, New York’s Taillon has been disappointing at best.

The right-hander has allowed four earned runs three times over his last eight starts and I expect Los Angeles to strike early, much like they did in the series opener. I’m going with the Halos to get it done in a high-scoring affair to cover the Run Line.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels +1½ runs (-135)
