The Seattle Mariners try to take another step toward a spot in the postseason when they begin a four-game weekend series against Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Mariners Hoping Seemingly Easy Schedule Pans Out
With the conclusion of their two-game series with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners have the rest of their schedule composed of teams under .500 and all but one out of playoff contention. The apparent cakewalk of a final couple of weeks makes it look like the Mariners should walk into the playoffs, but they’re not taking anything for granted.
The Mariners are also enjoying the end of a fantastic rookie campaign of outfielder Julio Rodriguez. On Wednesday, he became the third first-year player to reach 25 home runs and 25 steals in their initial MLB season. Rodriguez is the frontrunner for AL Rookie of the Year, hitting
.279 with 23 doubles, three triples, 26 home runs, 72 RBIs, and 78 runs scored.
“Everything I do, every single stat I put up, I just do it for the team,” Rodríguez said after Wednesday’s win over San Diego. “I feel I’m not trying to put myself above anybody. I just want to be able to perform for the team.”
Left-hander Robbie Ray will be on the mound for the series opener on Friday night. Ray is 12-9 with a 3.56 ERA in 28 starts, striking out 189 (seventh in baseball) in 166⅔ innings. The 30-year-old had four straight wins, including 13 consecutive shutout innings, before facing the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 9th, as he gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings in taking the loss.
Angels Hoping Home Brings More Competitiveness
After a six-game road trip against a pair of first-place clubs, the Los Angeles Angels hope a return to Angel Stadium will bring them some wins. The Angels have dropped six of their last seven, including five of six on the road against the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians over the last week.
Right-hander Michael Lorenzen will try to turn things around for the team when he makes his 15th start of the season on Friday. Lorenzen is 6-6 with a 4.70 ERA, striking out 57 in 76⅔ innings on the mound. Lorenzen took a no-decision in his last outing against Houston on Sept. 9th, going 5 ⅔ innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out two and walking four. It was his first action since July 1st due to a strained right shoulder.
Outfielder Mike Trout has cooled off a little bit after he hit home runs in seven straight games last week, but he is still coming off a 2-for-4 game on Wednesday against Cleveland. Trout is batting .280 with 20 doubles, two triples, 35 home runs, 70 RBIs, and 72 runs scored.
Mariners vs Angels Head-To-Head
The Seattle Mariners have a slight 8-7 advantage in the season series against the Los Angeles Angels heading into this weekend’s four-game set. Seattle’s most success this season has come on the road against Los Angeles, as they’ve won five of the six games played between these two at Angel Stadium.
