Mariners Slumping in Postseason Drive
The Oakland Athletics go for a second straight win against the visiting Seattle Mariners when the American League West rivals play the second of a three-game series on Wednesday night. Oakland took the opener and is in last place in the division standings.

Mariners’ Bats Silent
The Seattle Mariners have been struggling offensively of late, scoring a single run in each of their last three losses, and on Tuesday, they struggled to even get hits. Seattle had just one in the 4-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics, with the team’s only run scored on a bases-loaded walk.
“We haven’t had a good road trip. We swung the bats pretty well yesterday, I thought we were ready to get out of it,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said after Tuesday’s loss. “We had their starter on the ropes in the second inning and we let him wiggle off only getting the one run. Credit to him, he hung in there and ends up going five innings. But we certainly need to do more offensively.”
Designated hitter Carlos Santana had the only hit on an infield single. Santana is batting .201 with 16 doubles, 19 home runs, 57 RBIs and 47 runs scored.
Left-hander Robbie Ray will get the start, bringing a 12-10 record and 3.72 ERA to his 30th start. Ray is ninth in baseball with 194 strikeouts over his 171⅔ innings. He’s suffered two straight losses, including one on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels in which he went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, including two home runs, while striking out five and walking one.
Athletics Riding Solid Pitching
The Oakland Athletics haven’t been very good offensively, so they rely on their pitching staff to keep them in games. On Tuesday, it was rookie JP Sears and four relievers combining on a one-hitter in a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Trying to follow that up on Wednesday will be right-hander James Kaprielian, who will make his 24th start. Kaprielian is 3-9 with a 4.70 ERA, striking out 80 in 115 innings. He’s coming off a no-decision against the Houston Astros on Thursday, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking four.
Second baseman Tony Kemp was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in Tuesday’s win. Kemp is batting .238 with 22 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 43 RBIs and 57 runs scored.
Catcher Sean Murphy drove in a run with a double in the series-opening win. Murphy leads the Athletics with a .253 batting average, 66 RBIs and 63 runs scored, hitting 34 doubles, two triples and 18 home runs.
Mariners vs Athletics Head-To-Head
The Oakland Athletics cut their deficit in the season series to 8-6 against Seattle Mariners with Tuesday’s win. Seattle is trying to capture the season series from its division rival for the second straight season.
Oakland hasn’t been very good at home against Seattle despite Tuesday’s win, improving to just 4-12 against the visiting Mariners over the last two seasons. The MLB lines for Wednesday’s game favor the visitors picking up another win.
