New York on Two-Game Home Losing Streak
The Seattle Mariners try to win a second straight game when they face the host New York Mets in the second of a three-game weekend series on Saturday night. Seattle won the opener, 2-1, to continue a string of six games of alternating between wins and losses. New York suffered a second straight home loss but remains well ahead in the NL East standings, leading the second-place Philadelphia Phillies by 5½ games. This one should be another close one, so make sure you check out our in-depth preview of the contest before you make any bet online.
Mariners Eke Out Confidence-Boosting Win
The Seattle Mariners entered this series having dropped 12 of their last 15 games, so taking on the team with the best record in the National League didn’t look like a time to feel good. But Ty France’s eighth-inning RBI single proved to be the difference for Seattle in winning the opener, which has to be a boost for the team.
“I just try and simplify my approach,” France said of batting with runners in scoring position after Friday’s win. “You don’t need to do a lot. You just need to put a ball in play.”
France is 15-for-30 with runners in scoring position, the best in baseball among qualifying hitters. Overall, he ranks ninth in the majors with a .326 batting average, with four doubles, five home runs, 25 RBIs (seventh in baseball) and 15 runs scored.
Shortstop J.P. Crawford struggled a bit in Friday’s win, going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts, but he still ranks seventh with a .330 batting average. Crawford has seven doubles, a triple, four home runs, 11 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
Rookie right-hander George Kirby will make his second major league start. Kirby was called up from Double-A last weekend and took a no-decision in his first start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. The 24-year-old Kirby threw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking none.
Mets Find Little Offense In Return Home
The New York Mets went 4-2 on a recent road trip, averaging 4.5 runs over the six-game span. But when they returned to Citi Field on Friday night, the Mets managed one run on five hits while striking out seven times.
They’ll need more offense going forward to get some wins in this series. Getting more from second baseman Jeff McNeil would help, as the team’s leading hitter (.318) is just 2-for-11 over his last three games. McNeil went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday’s loss.
Designated hitter Pete Alonso also had his troubles, going 0-for-3 with a walk for his second straight hitless game. Alonso is batting .271 with five doubles, eight home runs, 28 RBIs (third in baseball) and 20 runs scored.
Right-hander Chris Bassitt will take the ball for the Mets. Bassitt is 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA in six starts, striking out 38 in 36⅔ innings. Bassitt was strong in his last outing, facing the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday and going 5⅔ innings while allowing one run on five hits.
Mariners vs Mets Head-to-Head
The Seattle Mariners are halfway to winning the season series from the New York Mets for the second straight time after having won two of the teams’ three meetings in 2017. Seattle improved to 5-2 on the road against the Mets all-time, having won the most recent series in New York in 2008 as well.
New York has never won a home series against the Mariners, having also lost two of three when they met for the first time ever in 2003. The MLB lines are favoring the home team in the second game of the series, which isn’t a surprise considering the teams’ records.

Seattle Mariners vs New York Mets Prediction
The Seattle Mariners have not shown much consistency of late, though they have a solid young pitcher on the mound. Still, the New York Mets have too much talent and should be able to tie this series up with a victory.
