Mariners Clash with Streaking Royals
The Kansas City Royals go for a fourth straight win when they open a three-game weekend series with the visiting Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Kansas City swept the Minnesota Twins in a three-game set and is in fourth place in the American League Central standings.
Seattle snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday and is in the last Wild Card spot in the American League, leading the Baltimore Orioles by four games. This should be an interesting series, so read our in-depth preview of the series opener to help you with your betting online.
Mariners Find Some Offense
The Seattle Mariners were having their troubles against the Los Angeles Angels in the first two games of their series this week, managing just one run in each contest and suffering two losses. But in the series finale on Thursday, they put nine runs on the board and came away with a 9-5 victory.
The win may have been costly, though, as rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez left the game with lower-back tightness after doubling and scoring in the contest. Rodriguez had missed some games recently with a back issue, so the Mariners are hoping the injury isn’t going to be something that lingers. He’ll undergo an MRI exam on Friday.
The 21-year-old Rodriguez is a top candidate for American League Rookie of the Year. He’s batting .280 with 24 doubles, three triples, 27 home runs, 73 RBIs and 81 runs scored.
Left-hander Marco Gonzales will get the start for Friday’s contest. Gonzales is 10-14 with a 4.01 ERA in 29 starts, striking out 92 and walking 47 in 166 innings. He took the loss in his last outing, going 6⅓ innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday and allowing five runs on seven hits, including three home runs, while striking out four and walking two.
Royals Finding Their Footing Late In Season
The Kansas City Royals don’t have the postseason to fight for right now, but they’re playing some good baseball, coming off a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins. The success has the Royals feeling good, as they’ve won four of five after a stretch of eight losses in 10 games.
“Much better version of baseball,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said after Thursday’s win. “The aim is always to win, but you put a couple of wins together against a team that you haven’t had success against and you see the confidence starting to swell.”
Right-hander Brady Singer will try to keep that good feeling going when he makes his 23rd start and 26th appearance on Friday. Singer is 9-4 with a 3.07 ERA, striking out 136 in 140⅔ innings. He’s been excellent in his last two starts, throwing a combined 13 scoreless innings, allowing nine hits while striking out 11 and walking two.
Outfielder Edward Olivares had a solo home run in Thursday’s win, his fourth of the season. Olivares is batting .305 in 2022, hitting seven doubles, driving in 14 runs and scoring 18 times in 41 games.
Mariners at Royals Head-To-Head
The Seattle Mariners swept their first three games with the Kansas City Royals this season, though that was back in April. The Mariners are hoping to win the season series after Kansas City took four of seven meetings in 2021.
Seattle has had success playing at Kauffman Stadium in recent years, going 8-2 at the venue since the beginning of the 2018 campaign. A look at the MLB lines for Friday’s series opener shows the Royals are expected to end that successful run with a win.
