The Milwaukee Brewers try for a second straight win when they open a four-game weekend series with the visiting Miami Marlins on Thursday night. Marlins Will Gladly Play Spoiler Role in Series

The Miami Marlins are not going to lay down for the Milwaukee Brewers, just as they didn’t against the New York Mets in their last series, splitting a two-game set with the leaders of the NL East. Miami has a young lineup and players trying to earn their spots on next season’s team, but it won’t be a pushover for the Brewers in their playoff quest.

Left-hander Braxton Garrett will get the start in the series opener, his 16th of the season. Garrett is 3-6 with a 3.52 ERA, striking out 81 in 79⅓ innings of work. He’s coming off a win over the Washington Nationals on Friday in which he went six innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out six and walking none.

Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs in Wednesday’s loss to the Mets. De La Cruz is batting .246 with 18 doubles, 12 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 34 runs scored and is on a nine-game hitting streak, going 11-for-16 at the plate over the last four games.

Brewers Need Some Home Cookin’ in Season’s Final Week

The Milwaukee Brewers are 43-31 at home this season and will play their final seven games of the regular season at American Family Field as they try to catch the Philadelphia Phillies for the final Wild Card spot in the National League. They trail the Phillies by a half-game heading into the last seven games and are focused on piling up as many wins as they can, no matter what Philadelphia is doing.

It’s big,” Milwaukee pitcher Brandon Woodruff said after Wednesday’s win over the St. Louis Cardinals that helped the Brewers gain a game on the Phillies. “We just need to keep handling our business and winning games. We’re aware of what’s going on, we’re just trying to continue playing good baseball.

Catcher Victor Caratini was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the win. Caratini is batting .202 with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 33 RBIs, and 26 runs scored in 90 games in 2022.

Left-hander Eric Lauer will get the start on Thursday for Milwaukee. Lauer is 10-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 27 starts, striking out 141 over 147⅔ innings. He’s working his way back after being sidelined for a couple of weeks with elbow tightness earlier this month, going just 2⅔ innings against the Cincinnati Reds in his last start on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three.

Marlins vs Brewers Head-To-Head

The Milwaukee Brewers have a slight season series lead on the Miami Marlins after taking two of three on the road in May. The Brewers haven’t lost a season series to the Marlins since the 2016 season.

Playing at home hasn’t been a great advantage for Milwaukee against Miami of late, as the Marlins have won the last two series played at American Family Field. The MLB lines for Thursday’s series opener don’t see that success continuing for the Marlins, with the home team favored to get the win.
