Mets Hope for Another Dominant Win

Floundering Marlins Swimming Down the Standings

It wasn’t too long ago when the Miami Marlins were actually flirting with .500. The Fish recently won four games in a row, two of which were against the powerhouse Houston Astros in Texas.

However, Miami has dropped four of its last five, making good on its lowly MLB odds with a 28-34 record.

The Marlins have had a league-average offense for the majority of 2022. Entering the weekend, Miami ranked 15th in runs and batting average and 13th in OPS. Somewhat surprisingly, Miami’s bats are outperforming its pitching, which ranks 18th in ERA and WHIP. That’s due in large part to a bullpen that has a 4.49 ERA, the sixth-highest mark in MLB.

Braxton Garrett will be tasked with delivering the Marlins a much-needed victory. The third-year lefty just made his season debut on June 5, giving up four earned runs in 3.1 innings. However, Garrett’s second start saw 5.2 innings with no earned runs and five punchouts against Houston.

Mets Have Big Dreams for their Big-Money Team

The New York Mets are tired of losing, so naturally, they opened up the checkbook. So far, their big offseason spending has led to an NL-best 43-23 record and a 5.5-game division lead. Now, the hope is for the Mets to give their fans an opportunity to bet them in their MLB picks late into October.

So far, New York has a league-leading offense to thank for its successful 2022 campaign. After a 10-4 win on Friday, the Mets are the MLB leaders in runs and batting average and rank sixth in OPS.

Amazingly, they have more runs than the crosstown Yankees dispute hitting 42 fewer homers. On the pitching side, New York ranks just 16th in ERA but 11th in WHIP and third in strikeouts.

With Cy Young winners Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer both on the IL, New York is counting on Taijuan Walker for Saturday’s game. The 29-year-old veteran has a solid 3.08 ERA but just 35 Ks in 52.2 innings.

Marlins vs Mets Head-to-Head

Friday marked the first of 20 matchups between the Miami Marlins and New York Mets. Interestingly, the NL East foes will meet three more times this series before having seven more matchups between now and July 10.

New York has dominated this rivalry over the last five seasons. Including Friday’s series opener, the Mets are 42-26 against the Fish since the start of the 2018 season.

Marlins vs Mets Prediction

To little surprise, the latest MLB lines peg the New York Mets as significant favorites. New York is -175 on the moneyline, while the visiting Miami Marlins are +155.

Even though Garrett and Walker aren’t aces and the Mets have a league-leading offense, the over/under is set at a modest 8.0. That could easily be something to bet online, especially with the over sitting at even money.

Garrett has flashed his strikeout stuff in his first two starts, but chances are New York’s contact-heavy approach at the plate will withstand it. Meanwhile, Walker pitches to contact, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem at spacious Citi Field.

After assessing this matchup and the Las Vegas odds, the best play might actually be to take the Mets -1.5. Of New York’s last six wins, five have been decided by multiple runs. That includes Friday’s series opener, where the Mets scored three runs in the first before teeing off for seven in their massive sixth inning.

Right now, you can get the Mets -1.5 at +110, which presents a much better bang for your buck than betting them on the moneyline. Look for New York to win this one by a considerable margin.
