Injury Concerns for Mets
Being on the wrong end of a 7-0 score against the San Diego Padres wasn’t the worst thing to happen to the New York Mets on Tuesday night. New York lost leading home run hitter Pete Alonso to a hand injury and Starling Marte also left the game early, leaving questions about players who hit second and fourth in the lineup. The early reports on the two of them are not promising.
After being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals, the Padres are a win away from taking their second straight series against a division leader in the National League.
The New York Mets are the second-highest scoring team on the road with 152 runs in 30 away games. Ironically, the only team ahead of the Mets are the Padres. San Diego is just 14-11 at home but has a National League-best 20 road wins. The Mets can match San Diego as they bid for their 20th road victory on Wednesday.
The probable pitching matchup features former teammates with the Oakland Athletics. Chris Bassitt went 27-11 over the previous three seasons in Oakland and is 4-3 in his first season with the Mets. Sean Manaea had a 50-39 mark over six seasons with the Athletics. He is 2-3 with the Padres.
According to the MLB playoff odds, the Mets (+700) have moved up to third in the odds to the World Series championship. The Padres are down to +1600. The Mets are listed at -500 to win the NL East. The Padres (+300) are well behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West odds.
Bassitt Seeks More Consistency
Bassitt’s first season with the Mets got off to a great start when he allowed five hits and one run over 12 innings in his first two starts.
However, since then, it has been a bit of all or nothing for the 33-year-old right-hander.
He has made nine starts since. In five of them, Bassitt has a 2,32 ERA with 20 hits allowed and 25 strikeouts in 31 innings. In the other four, he has a 7.94 ERA with 30 hits in 22.2 innings.
Bassitt labored quite a bit in his last outing with 110 pitches in six innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, so he will be looking to bounce back. As a staff, the Mets are fifth in the National League with a team ERA of 3.54 during the month of June. The Padres are one of the teams ahead of them.
When Bassitt has struggled, it is largely due to a failure to retire the first two hitters in the order. The Nos. 1 and 2 batters are hitting .328 against Bassitt with the other batters compared to a .146 average for hitters 6-9.
The MLB betting lines total has gone over in 10 of the last 15 games played by the Mets.
Profar Heating Up for Padres
On a team with Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer, Jake Cronenworth and Luke Voit, the hottest hitter for the San Diego Padres during the month of June has been Jurickson Profar.
Profar opened the scoring in Tuesday’s 7-0 win with a solo home run in the first inning. He also walked three times. He is hitting .345 with a .406 on-base percentage in seven games in June to raise his average of .248. He is 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs in the first two games of the series.
His home run was the 22nd extra-base hit for the Padres in seven games this month. San Diego had five doubles and three homers in a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. They followed that up with three more doubles and two homers against the Mets.
The top four hitters combined to drive in 10 of the 12 runs in the first two games of the series against the Mets.
Six of the last eight home games for the Padres have gone under the Las Vegas odds total.
Mets vs Padres Head-to-Head
The Mets have won five of the last seven games against the Padres. San Diego snapped a three-game home losing streak to the Mets thanks to Yu Darvish allowing two hits and no runs over seven innings.
Only two of the last 12 games have been decided by one run.
Manaea hasn’t pitched against the Mets since 2017 while this will be Bassitt’s first start against the Padres since allowing seven hits and two runs over 4.2 innings in 2018.

Mets vs Padres Prediction
With Alonso and Marte iffy to play, it might be hard for the Mets to bounce back after being held scoreless on Tuesday.
Staling Marte will have an MRI on his left quad today but Mets people see the IL as a likelihood

Neither Bassitt nor Manaea have been lights out recently but with a total of seven runs, this game is trending to be lower scoring than the first two games in the series. With the total tied for the lowest among Wednesday’s games, it’s a tough call to go with the under for those who bet online.
Manaea is looking to follow up Darvish’s strong outing with a good start of his own. Although the Padres have been solid at home, look for San Diego to wrap up the series with a win against the shorthanded Mets.
