Mets Look to Rebound

The New York Mets looked on their way to a 4-0 beginning to the 2022 campaign before giving up three eighth-inning runs to the Washington Nationals on Sunday to suffer their first loss. The Mets’ offense was silent other than a two-run fourth inning after averaging 5.6 runs in the first three games of the series.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor continued his solid start, hitting his first home run in the loss. Lindor has a double, a home run, two RBIs, three runs scored and four walks through four games.

Third baseman Jeff McNeil and outfielder Mark Canha each have seven hits through the first four games, though Canha has appeared in only three of those. He’s hitting .700 with two RBIs, two runs scored and three walks. McNeil is batting .438 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Right-hander Taijuan Walker will make his first start of the season in Monday’s series opener. Walker was 7-11 with a 4.47 ERA in 29 starts and 30 appearances in 2021, striking out 146 while walking 55.

Phillies Feeling Good Despite First Loss

Getting a couple wins to start a season can make a team feel unbeatable, like there are major things ahead of them. Taking a first loss can start to dash those dreams a bit, though the Philadelphia Phillies have the right attitude after suffering their first setback on Sunday to the Oakland Athletics.

“Nobody can go 162-0,” Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber said after Sunday’s loss. “It’s OK, alright? Just take it easy. We’ll be alright, guys, OK?”

The Phillies bats just weren’t connecting on Sunday, as the team was held to just three hits. Still, Philadelphia has a very solid lineup that isn’t going to get shut down very often.

First baseman Rhys Hoskins has been the hottest hitter in the early going, batting .444 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored in the series against Oakland. Second baseman Jean Segura is batting .364 with a double, two home runs, two RBIs and three runs scored. That’s not counting Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos, who will eventually heat up after slow starts.

Philadelphia will send left-hander Ranger Suarez to the mound in Monday’s contest. The 26-year-old Suarez made 12 starts among his 39 appearances in 2021, going 8-5 with a 1.36 ERA in 106 innings pitched. He had 107 strikeouts and 33 walks.

Mets vs Phillies Head-to-Head

The Philadelphia Phillies had the slight edge in the 19 games played against the New York Mets in 2021, winning 10 of those contests. The Phillies were 6-3 in games played at Citizens Bank Park and took six of the last seven matchups overall.

The teams have been fairly even over the last two seasons, with Philadelphia going 16-13 against its division rival. Playing at home has the MLB lines giving the Phillies the slight edge in the opener of this series.
