My prediction

The Mets have dropped six straight games, and they’re running a rookie into a buzzsaw. Blade Tidwell’s first and only MLB outing ended with a 14.73 ERA and a .500 opponent batting average. Now he gets to face off against Zack Wheeler, who owns a 2.76 ERA and a .187 OBA this season.

Philly is the better team, has the pitching edge, and is playing at home. This is a spot I’m hammering in my MLB run spread bets.

• Philadelphia Phillies -1.5 (+115)

Wheeler is 7-2 with a sub-0.90 WHIP and has struck out 110 in 88 innings. He’s also held this Mets lineup to a .255 batting average across 267 ABs. Combine that with Tidwell’s brutal debut and the Mets’ six-game losing streak, and this is one of the clearest edges on the board. If you’re looking at value on MLB futures odds, Philly is a team trending into elite form.

Wheeler has a 2.76 ERA and is dealing right now, with just two earned runs allowed in his last 12 innings. The Mets, meanwhile, have scored just 9 total runs across their last five games and now turn to a rookie with a 14.73 ERA. While Philly should handle most of the scoring, I don’t trust the Mets to contribute enough to clear this number. I’m leaning Under for one of my stronger MLB prop bets of the day.

Marsh is batting .252 with an OBP over .340 in limited ABs, and he’s quietly driven in 15 runs this season in just 139 ABs. Against a struggling rookie starter, I’ll take a shot on him doing damage near the bottom of the order with ducks on the pond. This is a low-risk, high-reward spot.

The MLB news on Philadelphia is 4+ runs scored in 3 of its last 4 wins, and Tidwell just gave up six earned runs in 3.2 innings. The Phillies also hit better at home (.272 AVG) and against righties (.256 AVG with 53 HR). I like this number based on splits, recent form, and the Mets’ bullpen getting stretched early. The Mets allowed 3 first-inning runs in their last 3 games, and Tidwell is unlikely to settle in quickly. Meanwhile, the Phillies’ top of the order includes Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber, who’ve combined for 103 runs and 77 RBIs. This is one of the more reliable MLB games to target for early action.
