Picks, Prediction for Mets vs Pirates on Friday, June 9
The struggling New York Mets run into a Pittsburgh Pirates team still competing for the National League Central with a one-game gap between them and the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets are on a six-game losing streak after getting swept by the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays last week. New York is 8 ½ games behind the Braves, and things are only worsening.
The MLB odds list the Pirates as slight favorites and a betting total of 9½ runs.
Mets: Offseason Acquisitions Not Working Out
It’s fair to label the massive bill the New York Mets racked up during the offseason as money not well-spent. Their biggest misstep was taking on a 40-year-old Justin Verlander. He’s one of the best to take the mound, but Father Time is undefeated, and Verlander has a 4.85 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in seven starts.
From an MLB betting standpoint, the Mets are the second-worst team in the league with a 23-40 record against the spread (ATS).
Pirates Not Fading
The most shocking glow-up in the MLB continues in Pittsburgh as the Pirates are keeping pace with the Brewers for the lead in the NL Central. They are 6-2 in their last eight games, both ATS and straight up.
After getting their mojo back, the Pirates remain a strong MLB bet against the spread against a team on a six-game skid.
Starting Pitchers
Tylor Megill (5-3, 4.40 ERA) vs Rich Hill (5-5, 4.41)
Tylor Megill rebounded nicely on Saturday after back-to-back 4+ run starts to end May. He tossed 5⅓ innings of one-run ball against the Toronto Blue Jays and lowered his ERA to 4.40. However, the Mets lost that game as their inconsistency at the plate continued. They have scored two or fewer runs in Megill’s previous two starts and three or fewer in five of his last six.
The Pirates have a robust .286 batting average against Megill in limited action, with Ke’Bryan Hayes going 3-for-5 to lead the way.
The Pirates will turn to Rich Hill on Friday to record back-to-back wins. He was excellent on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals with 6⅔ innings of four-hit ball. Hill allowed a single run and struck out six.
Don’t be fooled by his previous outing, though. The Cardinals are a mess, and Hill and Pirates are 0-3 against the MLB spread in his last three starts.
Mets vs Pirates Head-to Head
The Mets enter Friday on a 6-0 tear against the Pirates with a 5-1 ATS mark in that time. But that was the “old” Pirates who lost 100 games in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022.
